Crinkle cut fries are always mediocre compared to any other type. They are never crispy nor flavorful and I swear they must leak heat or something because I've never gotten them hot either. Crinkle cuts fries are so mediocre that I've started using them as a litmus test for people's taste when they say they like them. Every acquaintance or friend I know who claims they like crinkle cut has pisspoor taste and opinions on food, utter slop. You would be surprised how consistent this litmus test is when applied on the people around you!

I have deduced that crinklefags are in a state of deferred childhood trauma where the frozen crinkle cut fries were served to them for dinner in-between watching their father beat their mother, or maybe their ghetto's burger spot only served the cheapest frozen fries they could find. Either way they are to be pitied.

>hurr what's better then hmmm?
Shoestring, curly, waffle-cut, standard, homefries, steak in that order.

A bit thinner than that. The ones in that pic would be normal fries, no? At least that's what's normal for where I'm from.

>language
Italian, but it's highly regional. Outside of the Naples area, it's not commonly called potato hay but "thin/fine fries" instead, if they even know wtf I'm talking about.
I think it's cuz of Naples' historic links with Iberia since it seems that Portuguese calls it the same thing (paglia di patate in Italian, batata palha in Portuguese).

We usually have them as a side to thick stews since they're a pain to pick up with a stick (fried food on the go in Naples is eaten with sticks, pic related). How do you serve potato shoestrings?

The shape doesn't matter to me. However I'll share my all time fave fry seasoning recipe sans specific measurements with y'all, for anyone curious. I eyeball the ingredients and just go by taste testing.

Salt (good amount)
Sugar (about 1/4 the amount of salt)
MSG (just a little bit)
Paprika
Cayenne
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Black pepper
Allium ash (I make at home by burning onion and garlic scraps and powdering the charred remains)

I swear this is a god tier seasoning when you strike the right balance.

At the point where you cross into using a fork we refer to them as “hash browns”

Smokiness! Better than liquid smoke. I learned about allium ash from reading about it's use in Uruguayan cuisine. Its better than it sounds, you'd think it would just taste like charcoal, but it's a great smokey aromatic flavor when you make it right. A little goes a long way though, so I use it very sparingly.
