I worked for them down here in early 2000s. While it was all corporate the quality was better, size was bigger, and there was dine in restaurants everywhere.
About the time they started selling stores off as franchises they rolled out a smaller base, changed toppings to something else for ham to something similar but worse looking, and the cheese topping was different (2 cups of bottom cheese replaced one top cheese one bottom cheese).
The memo all stores got was if asked the size downsizing wasn't cost cutting, it was "to better compete with our rivals, with smaller sizes and newer toppings flavour will be better concentrated, if you don't reply to this post your mother will die in her sleep tonight, blah blah blah."
Can't blame them for cost cutting, at the time figures for sales were dropping for all stores hence why they closed a bunch of restaurants here, just wasn't really worth being open. But they've done nothing to salvage it for themselves.
Still remember the ingredients list for how everything was made back then, now and again I still make them at home rather than buying them. I can't relive how things used to be, but I can still make things the way I remember them.

I lived in the US in the 90s as an immigrant kid and, as an immigrant kid, was generally forced by my parents to overachieve. Got straight A's one semester (every semester, actually) and the school gave me a coupon for dinner at Pizza Hut. Do we went. And we all hated it. The sauce was too sweet, the cheese seemed if somehow and i remember the sausage bits having a flavour I found not only wholly unpleasant but the sausage also had a bizarre texture not unlike the pizza crust itself.
It's bad, but at least it's edible, unlike Papa John's.

Pizza hut used to be a legitimate sit down chain like Applebee's or red lobster, but they fucked up and sold out to Pepsi Co which pushed fast food hard.

There's a chain in Canada called Boston Pizza that filled the pizza hut void quite successfully, which proved people still seek out those pizzeria style places. Where I live they still had a sit down pizza hut, but after the pandemic they didn't go back to sit down and people stopped going and a local spot just mimicked the deals and got all their customers.

One of the doors was basically hanging off the hinges, dirty plates everything, floor covering shit. Toilet out of order. Menus sticky, even some lightbulbs were out. Everyone "working" there was an Arab immigrant who didn't even speak English - I had to point to order something off the menu.

And it's not just ihop. Everything is fucking shit. Nothing works. No one gives a damn shit breaks and no one fixes it, or there's trash on every street, or every public bathroom hasn't been cleaned in years even if you're a paying customer. There's a decline in basic living standards. Subway and Pizza Hut are just a symptom of the hollowing out of civic society in America, the utter collapse of communal investment, social capital, and simply giving a fuck, both from the ownership class and from the common man. That's what it's about.

Pre 2018 Marcos was based as fuck. They had the punchcard where after a certain amount of visits you'd get free shit, and they'd give out fucking 50% off your entire order coupons. I lived down the street from on in Orlando and would sometimes go every other Friday. The day they told me they were "Retooling" the rewards system and took away the punchcards I knew it was over.
