Why are cooking jobs so underpaid, /ck/ bros?

>> No.18698750

"Because people who work in the food industry are just unskilled labor. If you want to make more money, maybe try getting a real job instead of slaving away in the kitchen for pennies. Plus, if we paid cooks more, it would just drive up the cost of food for customers. So, quit your whining and be grateful for the crumbs we throw your way.

Food is something everyone has access to now, and most people are fine with just eating slop.

You say it's "unskilled", yet most people posting on this exact website cannot put together a peanut butter & jelly sandwich or cook a bowl of ramen.

>for someone makes your food
If you want genuine gratitude, stop expecting things in exchange for your cooking.
I will give you my money. You are entitled to nothing beyond that.

Because people like this >>18698750 we're raised by single mothers and have learned no respect and have no concept of a work ethic. They have never been in the heat of a kitchen with a boss shouting you down and 20 orders pending and half your arm hair just got singed off by fire and then you had to get behind the grill to clean out the grease traps while they are still cooking and you inhale 500 cigarettes worth of smoke and your clothes perpetually stink no matter how much you wash them.
And mister too cool for school wouldn't be able to get his goyslop without people sacrificing their health and working harder than he has ever worked in his life but this sick society has somehow deemed food workers as unworthy even though people would riot if they disappeared overnight.

because so many restaurant owners are willing to hire ex-convicts, drug addicts, mexicans who barely speak english, and all other assortment of undesirables and desperate people, the pool of people competing for the same jobs is very large and thus the pay necessary to attract enough labor is very low
the margins on food service are also not that great to begin with, despite the prices, so there's not that much profit to go around anyway, especially after the penny pinching regional managers have had their share and cut labor costs to ensure the skeleton crew running the place is a bare minimum expense

despite their constant bitching, servers are the only people making any respectable amount of money from restauranting via tips, which they only get by whoring themselves out and pretending to be nice to cranky boomers who need their daily dose self-importance from having underclass scum tend to their desires

>> No.18699256

That's not the answer. Plenty of unskilled labor positions pay much better.

I make enough money I can just pay people to bring me my food whenever I want. It's pretty great, honestly, because I suck at cooking and cooks are fucking losers anyway so it's not big loss being unskilled in that department. I rake in big bucks because I'm good at other things and everyone's happier. except the cooks

The entire premise behind the "restaurant industry" is perverse. Aside from the legitimate needs of long-distance highway travelers, cooking is properly an intimate, domestic family activity. Imagine if you started a business wiping other people's asses. What kind of patrons would you attract? And what kind of employees would you be able to retain? That's what a "restaurant" is.

and yeah it's really a total fucking mystery why jobs that suck far worse than food service might have to pay more money to get people to come back the next day.

This is why I pretty much only go to go to Jersey Mikes nowadays because their subs are kino and their workers only have to assemble ingredients instead of having to cook shit, so I don't feel bad about having to tip. I used to work at Publix in fucking Orlando, so yeah I can pay $9.46 (no sales tax because Montana lol) for a regular size sub dripping with pickled veggies and delicatessen meat cuts without having being asked for a tip, and feel no guilt. Good shit.

The last place I worked was part of some corporate restaurant family that monopolized all the restaurants in my tourist town and they not only wouldn't provide us with any closing beers but they prohibited us from purchasing them for ourselves.
