Most of the time, its also a food desert

The best spot in my shitty dying small hometown is a Mexican joint ran by actual Mexicans that barely speak English. I'm nowhere near the border, I think they probably came to work on farms in the summer and just stayed. Their food has tasted the same for 20 years and is extremely consistent, still affordable, and the portions are so huge I have to take some home every time. Very delicious and based.

They did have a good reason to exist once. Agriculture used to hire a lot more people. Cheap land and rail access meant they were good places to build factories (historically you built factories out where there were enough people to hire, AKA cities). Mechanization and outsourcing killed their reason to exist. I'm not sure if the rail situation changed and had an effect.

My grandmother used to work at a soap factory. They tried to move to the midwest instead of staying in Los Angeles. It was a disaster. There simply weren't enough people to hire out there and the shipping and transport was apparently a big issue. By contrast the LA factories were close to port (they shipped a lot of product out of the country). They came limping back to LA after a year or two.
