Well, that's actually what I generally make at a time. 3 "handles" of booze from 36 quarts. So, 13% into 40% every timeish. I make vodka, but if you want to get fancy, you need to output around 60% for flavour. So you end up with more. That takes time and it takes cuts. Look up "cuts" when distilling.

You go to distilling, you might blind yourself with methanol, or have a large fire.

Some friends and I ran a side hustle in college making shitty alcohol for frats and sororities. We'd make high abv rice wine and mix it with gatoraid powder to make it palatable. 2001 I converted my motorcycle to run on alcohol. Set up a still in my shed to produce fuel.
Did it for 6 years.
Made a mistake and ran empty one day. Took lunch break to buy 99% rubbing alcohol, boss caught me pouring it into my tank. Company did electronic component work for printers, wireless, motion control systems, some on DOJ contracts...
about 2 weeks later the FBI seized my wheels and still, got a $1200 fine and threatened with jail time. Banned from buying alcohol for 3 years, and prohibited to modify vehicles or own a motorcycle for 5 years.
Gag order about the case ended in 2016. Tried to get copies of the records of it in 2017... FBI claimed that the whole event never happened so there were no records.

It really and truly isn't a concern. Yes you should toss out the fores and much of the heads, but that's because they taste bad because of the acetone and other lighter/more volatile chemicals. Acetone itself is not dangerous to ingest in reasonable quantities, the Ld50 equivalent for an adult would be drinking half a liter of pure acetone (5g/kg for acetone compared to 7g/kg for ethanol). There aren't other low dose healrh issues with acetone either, but again it tastes and smells terrible so it should be removed.
Methanol is dangerous if ingested in its pure form even in small quantities. Distilling though, does not make a pure form of methanol at any point in the run and the percentage of methanol is small, like 1% if you're purposely trying to push the methanol content with pectin rich must, and is negligible for non fruit based mashes. A antidote for methanol poisoning is ingesting ethanol in a large enough quantity to saturate/out compete the liver enzymes that would be turning methanol into formaldehyde, which will surely happen since the methanol to ethanol ratio is so low. And as one last thing, methanol concentration is highest in the tails, not the heads as commonly thought- which goes against the common practice of using and redistilling tails. https://doi.org/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.1c00025 is the first accessible paper I pulled up but there are several that show the same thing.
There's also this misconception that each chemical boils off at a certain temp and then is gone. Mixtures don't work like that, each of the chemicals in solutions interact and change each other's boiling points which is an ever changing process in a still as vapors are removed and heat is added. It means that everything in the still gets smeared throughout the run but can be concentrated in certain parts. You probably already know this is happening with water, since you know the you're getting a mostly ethanol and water mixture out but you aren't at water boiling temp.

Get 12 jars clean and ready. Take the first 100ml into a jar. Swap jars and do another 100. Taste a drop or two out of this 100. You can fairly easily tell the difference between the foreshots and good booze. If youve got any question keep swapping every 100ml, you can always blend stuff back into the hearts later. Methanol will burn an invisible blue flame. Diethyl ether is the next to come out but thats pretty quick. Hearts will give off more yellow when ignited. If you want to get more precise read a chemistry book. I took a couple shots of ether once. You get drunk as shit for 30ish min then within an hour youre stone sober again- hard on the liver tho. More the latter than the former. Getting up in the morning is a huge pain in the ass, lots of coughing and dry heaving, makes it near impossible to get that morning cigarette in without feeling like I'm gonna puke. Fucks up my ability to do simple things because I feel like I'm going to jump out of my skin at any moment; can't do my job properly (professional musician) without it because I can't hit certain notes, feel more sluggish on pretty much any instrument, plus the coughing. Not true since methanol is only created during the fermentation process, distillation might concentrate it a bit at the beginning but typically it will still be far below a dangerous dose. What you just said is a myth from the days of prohibition when the mob and less savory moonshiners would extend their profits by adding methanol to their batches which ofc blinded and killed people.

Considering that distillation in the USA (and most of the world for some reason) is still illegal he probably would have had to since the largest you can get here is 1 gallon for fuel alcohol production and even then you still might get a very pleasant checkup call by the ATF to see what you're doing with that still (after they shoot your dog ofc).

Calculate the cost of heating it and then calculate the cost of whatever ferment slop you ferment. Works out to be over $10 a gallon. Why should I do this whenever E85 is $1.99 a gallon and tastes better?

Bong here who has to pay like 17.00 bong sheckles for a litre of crappy vodka so my column still was worth every penny. Cost me about tree fiddy (literally 350) and I can make 10 litres at 45 percent abv for roughly 20.00 - takes about 12 days start to finish.

alcohol is a emulsifier that holds the water and gas together, gas tank water remover is literally just alcohol
its also why 15% ethanol on regular gas is bullshit because it means the gas you're buying can be up to 15% water so you're buying 15% less fuel

I said e85 which is 85% alcohol. Add more water and it separates from gas and then you can drink it to your hearts content.

the gas will always stay chemically bonded to the alcohol, you can add water to the point it saturates the alcohols but then the water separate not the gas
