I'm visiting my gf in Norway, and she got me some whale steaks.
Any anon have a clue on how to cook it?
Don't know where to start. Wether to treat it like fish or meat.
I've been told it tastes like fish oil with the consistency of beef

Have you tried interacting with other people while in Norway?

>> No.18651977

Very important to not overcook it or it will be dry. I prefer it cooked bleu. Texture like meat, some say it taste like a mix of beef and liver. I recommend cream sauce for it, with mushrooms if you like. It's very lean.

Listen here motherfucker:
Contrary to the writings of the esteemed Melville, you MUST treat it like meat rather than fish. The flavor can be very good, not very fishy at all. However, whale can be very tough and very sinewy. The best whale I've had was smoked and served at a place in Oslo. You can sear/grill it like you would steak, but again you risk having it be very tough. As I recall, the meat will be very red, even when cooked through, so you can't use that as an indicator of doneness. Braising it would probably be your best option.

>> No.18652093

>>18652057
>Braising
Absolutely not. Whale is super tender when raw, it's the cooking that makes it though. Quickly sear and eat it bleu, rare or medium rare. Nothing more than medium. It will turn grey when well done, like beef. It will also taste more "whaley" the more you cook it.

your Norwegian gf will know how to cook proper and you should listen to her. Norwegians have been eating whale for centuries, but do know it is often salted and fermented. Report back your opinion of it afterwards please.

I've only had whale at the cantina while in Norway and honestly I'm not a fan. It essentially tastes like a tougher version of beef with a bit of a liver aftertaste. Not really worth the drama, desu.

So you are totally ignorant on the subject yet you ask people to kill themselves based on your uneducated opinion.

Common mink whale has a healthy population that is growing year by year, and is the only whale that Norway hunts for. There's absolutely no danger of extinction.

whale is still eaten because it feeds a village and they are tricked so easily into bays to be slaughtered, but it isn't known to be delicious, whatsoever. It's not sustainable. Nor is it safe due to mercury levels.

Cook it like it's swordfish steak, minimally seasoned or blackened, flavored with grill marks, with lemony aoili, homemade tarter sauce, or remoulade to serve, since it's purchased and then realize it's stupid to ever eat it again. Stick to foal, another dumbass legacy dish to prevent starvation, still served to tourists that keep the industry going. Next you could have some hakarl, rotten shark meat to make sure the peaceful greenland shark goes extinct.

You're talking about grindadráp in Faroe Islands which is completely different from the whaling industry in Norway, not even the same whale species.
