Maybe I’m missing something but espresso seems like the dumbest shit imaginable. You spend hundreds of dollars (at minimum) on bulky and finicky equipment only to begin a seemingly endless process of trial and error which, even when approached with exacting precision, produces totally inconsistent results. I’ve seen people spend $2000 or more on their “setups” and then state with a straight face that that less than a third of third of their shots are really good. Meanwhile with tea, I can buy a $20 teapot or gaiwan, and make multiple delicious cups every single time just by eyeballing it. What gives?

obsessing over the process and equipment is honestly part of the fun, just like many other hobbies. start getting into yixings and clays and you'll see the autistic side of tea equipment as well, i've seen $200 tea cups that people really buy

No, Espresso isn't the issue. People buying commercial machines to use at home is the issue.
If you're someone like a content creator, or reviewer then I kind of udnerstand having those sort of machines in the home. But for the average person, a pod machine would do for espresso, and / or a couple different brew options like AeroPress, V60, etc.

Also, this guy in picrel must genuinely be a fucking retard. What he's complaining about on his 2k machine, is not a problem on the cheap 300$ "domestic" coffee machine I have. Don't need to wait for heat ups, etc. Just pull your shot, froth your milk and you're done.

People just can't help but waste money, that's the problem. These big commercial coffee machines are not meant for 2 coffees a day at home, they're meant for hundreds throughout the day.

This. If you're spending that much on a fucking coffee machine to make a couple drinks a day at home you are a genuine retard.

Just use a moka pot. 95% as good as espresso for a tiny fraction of the cost.

you know something? peeps like that who have money like that to spend, are the reason sportsbooks place bet limits on your shit sometimes. imagine playing the house so hard with $2000 coffee money looking to cashout on the thinnest margins possible. disappointed when the margins aren't even tasty or efficient and easy. fucking nob.

The funny thing is that even commercial places rarely buy these expensive machines, they lease them. If they get a defect they just change it for another one without having to expend thousands of dollars to fix it.
