The fact that people are still afraid of MSG is so fascinating. There was like a single botched study that claimed it to be hazardous, and then every single study since has disproven it, but it's like everyone just chose to ignore that.

Same as ‘low fat’ and ‘gluten-free’. Just dumb fad diets from people who know they need to lose weight but are too lazy to actually do any physical work.

Everyone always fights over the safety of MSG, while I alone thinks MSG just tastes like shit. I like my broth gracefully simple; I don't need a factory-made Umami concentrate bomb destroy all subtle taste.

Also MSG makes me really thirsty.

I avoid it because it makes normal food taste nothing in comparison. That's why Asians always crave a cup noodle despite having fancy European dishes when travelling.

They don't even know why they're addicted to tea (hint: caffeine)

Because nutrition is full of schizo pseuds and npc's who believe anything they say. It's up there with economics for retardation. Boomer women at my work literally still think eggs are bad for your cholesterol even though everyone got over that nonsense 30 years ago.
Don't believe anyone who pretends they are 100% certain about nutrition stuff, modern day example would be the seedoil schizos on /ck/

What’s wrong with canola oil?

I could never get the amount right. It's like it goes straight from "can't taste a difference" to "whoops the food tastes rancid now".

The biggest issue with canola, or seed oils in general, is that they are really cheap & calorie dense. If you compare what the average American eats today vs the average American did in the 1980s, most of the food groups (meat, dairy, fruit, veg, even sugar) have stayed about the same calorie wise. Grain consumption has moderately increased, and added fats & oils (which are mostly those cheap seed oils) has significantly increased. And those extra calories from increased oil & grain eating match up with the rise in obesity almost perfectly.

There are also concerns about the particular fats in seed oils causing inflammation & metabolic issues, alongside worries about the solvents used to extract the oils from seeds not being completely removed from the final product, but those claims are much more disputed. It is hard to dispute though that people adding a few hundred extra calories of oil into their diet every day will make a bunch of people fat over time.
