I'm about to pull the trigger on a moka pot, but I'm not sure if i should get the E&B lab 3 cup or grab a Bialetti 3 cup and just get the B&L filter separately. Or is there a better option for "moka pot" brewing that I'm missing? (inb4 espresso)

Just got an Ethiopian light roast natural coffee from volcanica coffee. Its supposed to taste like blueberries, jasmine and sugarcane. It definitely tastes of blueberries at the beginning of a sip and sugarcane at the end but I can't make out the jasmine. It has only rested about 5 days so maybe it needs more time and clarity. As the cup cools the sugarcane takes over and it kind of tastes like molasses water, which is a good thing. All in all a 4/5 coffee.

I don't mind if you like pepe; it could be worse. But for me it seems like the frog has lost any of the meaning it might have had in the beginning. Even years ago elementary school kids were drawing pictures of him, nowadays it's likely one of your relatives might have a meme with pepe saved on their phone. I dunno; maybe I'm holding onto a past where "reaction images" were more than just chad pepe and wojak. Got into the manual coffee game like two months ago (trying out the moka pot, aeropress, V60 but mainly using the V60) and had my revelatory moment today when I visited my parents and had an "espresso" from their bean-to-cup machine. Shit was so sour, like fucking hell, none of my own brewing attempts ever tasted like that. A few months ago I had no clue coffee could even differ in taste to this extent.

I guess with the storebought flavored and sweetened kefir it may not be terrible, but the idea of mixing proper unsweetened, extremely tart kefir with coffee sounds terrible. I make my own though and it's more sour than like straight lime juice. Actually, strained out the whey before when making kefir cheese, then added lime juice and a bit of sugar and let it carbonate, was pretty fucking tastey. Anyway uh yeah, kefir + coffee is a no from me dawg.

I got one of these because I wanted to compare an "endgame" grinder to what I had and it was available whereas I'd have had to wait another 6-12 months for a p64 or p100. Originally had a Weber Key preordered because I figured if I liked small traditional conical burrs I'd like big ones even more. This can run the same mazzer 83mms as the key + a bunch of other sets. I've got ditting lab sweet burrs in it right now.

It makes pretty good coffee. But so does the kinu. I'm trying not to make any judgements until I put 100lbs through the burrs since they're meant for high volume commercial use. Hand grinder burrs are fine after about 5-10. If I had to make some real general comparisons between, the lab sweets have way more "focus" when it comes to bringing out individual flavors while still having a similar blending between the notes as the kinu. But softer? Kinu shots linger and coat my palate while sweets seem to finish cleaner and more distinct. Just about any grinder past a certain price point can be reasonably dialed in to make great coffee, but going from $199 to $2k+ seems to have just given me a 50x larger sweet spot to get tasty coffee. Its almost annoying. I liked fucking around autistically dialing in the kinu.

Evens out surface area and friction. For conicals any inconsistent roughness on the burr edges gets rolled over and polished out. What that actually does and how it affects the taste of your coffee is tbd but it does "something".
>During further sliding, all protrusions are gradually removed and a smooth surface is formed. As long as protrusions are present on the coating surface, the friction coefficient does not reach the steady-state. From the explanation described above, we can conclude that the rougher the coating is, the longer the time that is required to obtain the steady-state value of the friction. The period until a conformal sliding contact is formed is called the running-in phase. In this period we can expect a transition from mechanical wear-dominated friction to adhesion-dominated friction. The larger contact surface is reflected in a higher friction coefficient due to the higher adhesion component of the friction. It is also valid that as the contact area increases, the contact pressure decreases.

As someone who can’t wake up properly, ease of adjustment and crazy throughout of k-max is pretty great. I upgraded from random steel burr grinder, and flavors + clarity increased quite a bit. Maybe 0.3g of grinds get stuck around the burr opening in rim covering the burr opening, and I have to smack or brush the grinder each use to get them out (alternatively knock it out and toss it, because what get stuck tends to be fines and chaff). Slight annoyance but I never tried if RDT fixes it. Not sure about typical build quality because my unit was literally perfect, which is rare for anything. Didn’t consider kinu at the time, because I overwhelmingly saw c40 being memed and shilled hard at the time

>pre-roast influences (untreated, soaked in ethanol and dried before roasting, soaked in flavored distilled spirits and dried before roasting)
>roast level (light, medium, dark)
>post-roast influences (control, soaked in neutral spirit and dried, soaked in flavored spirit and dried)

>But don’t expect this coffee to rely solely on that tiny citric slice of the flavor wheel to wow you. Its complexity hits you after that first sip: there’s a good amount of sugar browning in the flavor, from caramel to brown sugar the sweetness is rich, almost molasses-like. We picked up some dried fruit, as well, in the same sensory neighborhood: raisin, dried mango, dates, and prunes. There’s some black or oolong tea-type flavors, a uniquely Burundian flavor note in coffee, and plenty of hints at spice and florality including rose, clove, and chamomile.

how i do it is
>feel like i am good at whatever new method or whatever i have been practicing recently using good but "cheap" beans
>decide to test myself
>buy really expensive beans and see how well i can perform
>if its way better than i know its my skill and the beans
>if it is a little better i know its probably just my beans and i have no skill
>if its worse i know my technique is total dogshit and i have fucked up in multiple areas
this has been working well for me, obviously there are a fucking shit ton of other variables. but this is good enough for just a test of skill
also buy the high quality beans from the same region/farm/country that you buy your normal beans also same process otherwise you could hate the coffee and think that its all you when if fact you did a good job but you just dont like those beans.

gotta think of beans with a level of potential.
like shit beans have a peak of goodness that is pretty low and at best can taste "ok/fine" but with good beans that goodness has a much greater peak, it has more potential that can only be exploited with adequate skill and knowledge.

That's a fucking horrible handle. Also, fuck Comandante. I am so glad I went with the 1zpresso. The new version of the c40 has even more plastic parts and they axed almost all of the wood veneers–those are all plastic now, too–which were the only reason it got its luxury status. And now they're patent trolls for a completely unremarkable crank handle that exists on every handgrinder ever made? Jesus Christ.

Pretty much, cortados are the bomb. Steamed milk is vastly superior to frothed, no comparison. If drinking regular coffee, I take it black. Thought I was a child for putting milk and sugar in coffee, turns out cheap dark roast just tastes like shit and needs to be smothered. Freshly roasted and ground medium/light roasts are a revelation.

If you're brewing espresso with unpressurized baskets and actually want it to be good, you will need a 1zpresso Jxpro, or kingrinder k4 at minimum. Not much point to spending less, you will just want to buy a better one. I am satisfied with my k4 but almost wish I'd gotten a Jmax on sale for $160 because it's adjustments are twice as fine.
>>18566033
yeah same for food, it's just fuel so why even bother with seasoning or cooking it properly.

Anyway, I have a question I spent $140 on a kingrinder k4 for espresso earlier this year. It works great, rarely will I feel like I need an "in between" step but the espresso tastes great. However, the Jmax is now on sale for $160. Will I notice significant improvements in taste? Or will it just be more precise for dialing in? The magnetic cup and carrying case is also appealing for travel and convenience, perhaps I should spend my money on getting into roasting before making an incremental grinder upgrade..

Yes. I am glad I fucked around with coffee enough as a teenager to find that out. I like ristretto on light-medium roasts as a base for cappuccino and macchiato, though I haven't had enough to really have dialed in my tastes. Dirty chai is nice.

That's interesting. I've come to similar conclusions in grocery store coffees. I think I recommended some of the same ones in his final round in a previous thread. Although: the Peet's Big Bang is a hit or miss. That one is kind of an ambitious blend for a mass-marketed coffee in that they're using some amount of specialty grade natural in it that is sometimes sweeter and fruitier. My guess is a Burundi. Haven't had grocery store coffee in years. Never had Tim Horton's, but Dunkin' Original blend is eminently drinkable. Anyway, I think this guy's palate is trustworthy.

Well, you can get a lot of those coffees in whole bean at most grocery stores. And that does make a difference. But as a guide for people who run out of good coffee for whatever reason and have to find something drinkable at the grocery store, I think this video is very helpful. Like you're in the middle of nowhere with only a grocery store or a walmart, the mail was slow, it's late afternoon on a holiday and almost everything is closed, etc.
