You have to specifically feed them a diet that causes insulin resistance as quickly as possible. Once insulin resistant, any attempted storage of fat will fail and the fat will come spilling back out of the intended storage place and into wherever the fuck it just happened to be. This is why there's fat all over the meat.

I imagine a large part of the cost is tied up in the ridiculous diet these cows are fed to force them into insulin resistance. You can't do it the human way with pure junk/processed food as you'll probably just kill the cow.

Wagyu does NOT mean japanese beef

American "wagyu" is very often mostly black angus and as long as there is SOME wagyu genetics involved (even if several generations old) it still can be sold as "wagyu" in the US.

However, if it's A5 Wagyu, then that's Japanese as the grading scale only exists in Japan.

For example you wont find "A5" American wagyu.

Yes, and plenty of American "wagyu" is sold just as generic "wagyu beef" in US stores.

Unless it has a Japanese grading (A4/A5), it's not real wagyu.

Plenty of Australian beef is bred from wagyu stock and while they generally aren't pure wagyu, they're often a much higher percentage wagyu than American wagyu, so high quality Australian beef can COMPARE to real wagyu, but still isn't full blooded wagyu like you'll get from Japanese Wagyu.

I have bought Wagyu from japan, and Australian beef online several times.

Again, there is wagyu from japan that is 100% full blooded wagyu and is graded on the Japanese beef grading scale.

Then there is "American wagyu" which just means, at some point in that cows ancestery there WAS a Japanese cow. However, due to Japanese export laws surrounding beef, cattle, sperm, and eggs. It is VERY difficult to get a large quantity of Japanese beef for breeding outside of japan, so most "American wagyu" is a very VERY small percentage japanese, and mostly American cattle by DNA (usually black angus).

American wagyu is generally not considered "real" wagyu because it's so far removed from a Japanese cow that it's nothing like wagyu from japan.

I don't think it's a pure meme, but I stopped watching that fat spic steak cooking youtube because it was literally just bacontime 2000s tier with wagyu instead of bacon. Instead of something useful or interesting like historical steak recipes or "here's how to make a lesser cut of steak taste better (he did that once)" it was "wow let's make steak dishes with wagyu". Personally I also like a leaner but still some fat cut of beef too. And while quality can beat quantity it's hard to imagine a situation where the price difference that feels like 1 to 70 or more is worth it. It might be fox and the grapes of me but it does have the whole air of weebism for how an island nation that barely eats beef can somehow produce some thousand folded bushido spirit beef that apparently the entire fucking rest of the world never managed to learn how.

Its literally just genetics and Japan is very particular about their cattle export because of this. It's illegal to transport Japanese cattle sperm or eggs outside of Japan. Which is why finding a high % wagyu bloodline outside of Japan is difficult to impossible, and it's how Japan maintains their wagyu quality in comparison to everyone else.

You can't just "learn" how to make your cows have Japanese cow genetics without an actual Japanese cow to breed. And even then you'll need more than just a handful of Japanese cattle to produce a healthy breeding pool of 100% genetic wagyu that would be capable of sustaining a population for beef production.

Tldr; it has nothing to do with the rest of world "learning" how to do it. It's all genetics.

There are two kinds of "wagyu".
>Real Wagyu
From glorious Nippon, land of four seasons, cows massaged by japanese gfs and anime waifus, butchered with samurai sword (steel folded over 9000 times), flown to USA on restored A6M Zeros, sliced thin and eaten raw with chopsticks after cleansing palate with boiling sake, comes with Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Japanese Emperor for display alongside your framed Pokemon cards, 10/10 goat poggers.
>American "wagyu"
The next iteration of the Australian Black Anus Beef meme, vapid ((marketing)) bullshit, means absolutely nothing, no legitimate certification, your dog's kibble is probably "wagyu" too, there are even geniuses buying "wagyu hamburgers" even though marbling means nothing for ground beef, you got memed, you played yourself, press Alt-F4 and uninstall the game, gg no re.
