Not OP but my local Asian market was already sold out of moon cakes a couple of days after the festival. I wanted to try the snow skin or one of those ice cream moon cakes. Normally I like the su style best. The ones in OP pic are too large and rich for me.

The ones in OP pic are way too rich to eat all in one sitting. I usually have to cut it into four pieces and eat it over several days. Try the Suzhou style moon cakes like pic related that have a flaky crust and are smaller. The one in this pic has a pork filling, but I've only tried the ones with sweet fillings like red bean paste with salted yolk.

My gf in China got food poisoning from a cheap mooncake one of her coworkers gave her last year. Not saying it's a common occurrence, but it happens. I'm guessing the egg yolk was undercooked somehow, but I'm not even sure how that would happen. I guess it's possible the mooncake was homemade.

Which brand did you get? If you spent quite a bit of money, you probably got ones manufactured from a Hong Kong company which treats safety seriously. If you got the cheapest one, yeah, you might have gotten one from China but that would be considered near top class mooncake in that country. Mooncakes are often gifted to people or used as bribes, putting in fake shit there is paramount to signing your own death warrant from the gifter to whoever made it and it's one of the things that gets cracked down in mainland China.

Mooncakes don't last that long, and by now, most that are cheap are gone. But as said, try some other varieties, lotus seed with salted egg yolk is the most common variety but not the only option.
