Is "fast food" dead?

You can seethe about people eating fast food all you want, but the fact is sometimes it's OK to have when you're traveling, super busy, hungover or just being lazy. But what's the fucking point now? it's almost restaurant prices and the service is more abysmal than it's ever been, generally.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I bought two mcdoubles and a junior chicken for like 11.50, ate all 3 and felt like shit after. it's just not worth it anymore. Pretty sure that mcdonalds order was the cause of my cold that just randomly sprang up too. but one a side note i got a good deal at kfc a few days ago, got a famous chicken sandwich for 4.95.

Do you have your head in the sand? McDonald's used to have 1$ sandwiches and burgers. They're 3 dollars now just for the cheapo garbage ones. A meal at McDonald's is now 10 dollars where 10 years ago it was 5.99. Yes, it's inflation, but it's more than just that. The value of going to these places is definitely much much worse. They rarely ever offer good deals anymore. All of it is "app only" garbage so they can try to turn you into subscribers basically.

I've never been so glad I stopped eating fast food and learned to cook. Fast food is a bigger ripoff than it has ever been. People who eat there are literally just making themselves fatter and poorer for no reason.

Sure.

Eggs
Rice
Beans
Onions
Peppers
Mushrooms
Cooking oil
Ham
Turkey
Chicken
Apples
Oranges
Carrots
Bananas
Mustard
Salt
Pepper
Water

It will initially cost more to get things like oil or other basic ingredients, but then you can mix and match any of these things to make cheap tasty meals that average out to 2-3 dollars each and it gives you plenty of variety and they're simple meals so they don't involve complicated cooking. Sautee everything for low calories and good taste. Optionally, pick up some sauces to diversify your meals.

If you're a fat fuck and eat over 2k calories, it will cost a little more, but you can easily eat 1200-2000 calories per day and lose weight on the items I listed above. Cost varies state by state and yet still those things are infinitely cheaper and better tasting than fast food.

>> No.18268489

But financial metrics say otherwise.
If someone orders via app,
>they aren’t holding up a line deciding what they want
>a worker isn’t spending time having to enter their order and customizations or answer questions
>money transaction consumes no time (same reason restaurants often use those vending tickets in Japan)
It removes a bottleneck. And when you scale that enterprise-wide to a massive chain with millions of customers every day, it shows up on the books.

They do the online ordering because they want people to constantly advertise the product to themselves.

>Open phone
>Big app for the product is right on their phone that they use constantly, reminding them of the product

Maybe you can't read. I assume you aren't. If you eat fast food, there's a very high chance you're poorer than I am.

>And why do you assume that someone can only choose between zero fast food and every fucking meal being fast food?
If you don't care about being wasteful with money and 10 dollars doesn't matter, then why should it matter for every meal? Why not have it delivered with door dash and add another 10 dollars to your bill? There is no logical end to your bad decisions. If you're willing to waste 10 dollars once, then you'll waste 10 dollars anytime on a whim. Until you don't have enough money left to do so.

So it's easy to assume that people that have such thought processes are poor or stupid.

I know, you're retarded as shit and don't seem to understand how a kitchen works or how they actually process online orders. I'll give you a hint: try ordering on the app and showing up at precisely the time you ordered it and let me know how often your order is ready for the time that you put it in for. Because the answer is not very often.

If you think these high schooler fast food workers are worrying about online ordering when they have impatient customers in a line outside their window, I just have to laugh at you.

The simple truth is it doesn't have that much of an impact and you're grossly overstating its effect to defend and justify company shifts to subscription and loyalty models.

>Double cheeseburger at my closest McDonald’s is $2.59. They’re BOGO through an app deal. So basically $1.30
So basically if you jump through their hoops and they happen to have some kind of app only deal at the time that saves you money then maybe you can find something cheap. And only at the low low cost of advertising to yourself and enabling these companies to enslave you through future commitment deals.

Just remember in the future after these fast food places start rolling out more and more "customer loyalty app only" and "subscription only" services that you were a fucking retard and I was right. Yea I'm calling bullshit. Post your year of graduation, degree, current job and salary. I'm expecting you to continue the LARP

No working adult finds it impossible to conceive of a reality where sometimes there are more interesting things happening in life that they don't have time to cook and pick up something quick.

My job and salary actually puts me into the category where I could conceivably eat out for every meal but I actually enjoy cooking and there is cost saving involved by not spending so much money on restaurants everyday.

But normal adults don't take ridiculous one side or the other stances on such things.

Cultured adults know that there are also meals that are impossible, near impossible, or a complete waste of time/money for the home chef to create at home. They range from extravagant things like Michellin dining experiences to basically any deep fried food you aren't making for a large dinner party.

>No working adult finds it impossible to conceive of a reality where sometimes there are more interesting things happening in life that they don't have time to cook and pick up something quick.
In other words, you have no foresight or ability to plan ahead and stock nothing at home. You are frequently lazy, make poor decisions, can't cook, and thus waste money rather than make better decisions. And you're angry at me because I don't let myself slip to your lazy indulgent standards.

>My job and salary actually puts me into the category where I could conceivably eat out for every meal but I actually enjoy cooking and there is cost saving involved by not spending so much money on restaurants everyday.
If this were true you would agree with me. Either you're so rich that your time genuinely is worth the money to just throw money at getting restaurant food delivered(not fast food garbage), or you don't have enough money and cooking home meals is the only sensible thing to do. There is no in between. If you eat fast food, you're stupid.

>But normal adults don't take ridiculous one side or the other stances on such things.
No True Scotsman fallacy.

>Cultured adults know that there are also meals that are impossible, near impossible, or a complete waste of time/money for the home chef to create at home.
None of those meals are served at fast food places. If you can't cook everything on a fast food menu, you're a failure of a cook.

Fast Food as a concept and business is not dead. However, I think the current titans of the fast food world are dying. McDonald's, Taco Bell, BK, Wendy's, etc are all floundering right now. The main reason is as you stated, prices have gone up, service is not as fast as it was, and the quality is the same if not worse. OP is correct in that the value proposition of fast food just isn't there anymore. Wages haven't kept up with inflation. Making $10 per hour a decade or 15 years ago and then going to the dollar menu at McD's after work wasn't a big deal. But if you're still making $10-$15 per hour...a meal at mcdonald's is gonna cost an entire hour of your time. Not a good deal when you can get better food at another restaurant for $10-15.

What I think is going to happen is that higher quality Fast Food restaurants will proliferate, while the old guard falters. We've already seen this with the expansion of Shake Shack and Chick Fil A, but it's going to accelerate. Whataburger just opened a million spots in my hometown, I still haven't had it yet, but it's popular and people are willing to pay for it.

Braum's is another example of a fast food restaurant I think could take over. Their vertical integration allows them to keep many costs down. I can get a double quarter pounder cheeseburger, large fries, and a large chocolate milkshake for under $10. Not sure where else I could achieve that

So I guess we need to have _that conversation_.
The conversation of the philosophy of a fast-food cook.
Our overall goal is happy customers.
This is accomplished via three main methods: Speed, accuracy, and consistency.
Speed means when the thing beeps at us, we jump on it like paratroopers.
Accuracy means we make what the ticket says. (this one seems obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people are literally illiterate and embarrassed to say so. Reading is a kung fu skill like any other, you gotta grind on it on the daily.)
Consistency: Each time I make X item, it's the same item. The customer expects such.

The only time fast food is worth it these days is if you are traveling and stopping doesn't make sense. Not him but Taco Bell at least is the last vestige of actual decent deals. Currently:

Chipotle Ranch Grilled Chicken Burrito: $2, 510 calories
Beefy Melt Burrito, $2, 620 calories
Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito: $1, 420 calories
Fiesta Veggie Burrit: $2, 570 calories
Combo Meal: $5, 800-1300 calories depending on what you choose

All of those are sufficient. The single burritos are enough if you aren't fat, and even if you're fat the combo meal should be enough at $5 and it's way cheaper than its competitors. Of course, that's a narrow menu, but it does allow cheap options.

It is accurate as of today. Go check it out if you don't believe me. There will be like 30 cents of tax or whatever but otherwise the prices are accurate. Yes, the 5 layer burrito is not a cheap item. But the guy you responded to said Taco Bell is frequently selling some fat caloric bomb burrito for nothing and he's right. They constantly introduce new items and sell them dirt cheap to get people hooked on them and then try selling them at a higher price later on, but there is always 3-5 burritos loaded with 600-1000 calories rotating in the 1-2 bucks menu at any given time.

>They're not targeting 4chan. It's a canvassing of the entire internet. They don't say "4chan" in the meetings. They say "500 popular websites in combination reaching 95% of all internet users."
You can easily track sites like Twitter and Facebook to show your return on investment.
You can't do that with 4chan. Especially not if you're secretly doing it instead of paying whatever nothing fee 4chan charges to use their real advertising services.
Don't work in marketing personally (I'm an engineer) but I've seen companies I've worked at advertise on plenty of websites and not once has 4chan ever been a part of that.
ROI is kind of the entire basis for anything a marketer ever does, and an anonymous anime fan site where you go out of your way to refuse the actual tools a paid ad would afford you is the worst way possible to establish any sort of ROI.
It's worthless even if you secretly made you restaurant's traffic jump by a huge amount because you would never be able to establish proof it was because of your actions afterwards.
So great for the corporation, but again, corporations don't make decisions, people working at corporations trying to get credit for their accomplishments make decisions. So any beneficial to the business decision you can't get credit for is as bad as a decision that doesn't help the business from the perspective of anyone who could pull the trigger.

You can get a tray that has a sandwich, and comes with two sides (which can be things like corn dogs, chicken wraps, quesadillas--you name it) and a drink and it comes out to like 9 dollars. This has become something of an urban legend in Canada. The Big Xtra was basically a version of the Big N Tasy, but the patty was larger and seasoned with a unique grill spice. When the Big Xtra was dropped, some franchises continued to serve it due to how McDonald's supply chains worked. While most people stopped seeing the Big Xtra in the early 00s, some people were finding locations serving it years later. I believe the most recent confirmed sighting was 2014, but all the photos are like pictures of Bigfoot.

Right but you're also just wrong here. It's not "loose interpretation" by others. You are interpreting it incorrectly. >It's all the same shit and they are paying all the same fucking prices, so why is it just okay for them to upcharge people who live in wealthier areas?
If you mean okay as in tolerated, it just boils down to it not being illegal and the intended consumers not giving enough collective fucks to force them to equalize prices one way or the other.

He's right and you're all wrong. Deals are often bullshit and it's not hard to find examples of stores marking up a price then marking it down a few days later, just so they can put an enticing "50% off!" sticker on it. High-low pricing is blatantly manipulative.

That's why Walmart was based for implementing everyday low prices (EDLP) so you don't have to wait for sales or any other bullshit special occasion. You also know if you buy a product you won't kick yourself the next day when it goes on sale--it's already at the lowest possible price.

If you like deals you're a primitive skinner box rat. Enjoy dancing to the Jew's fiddle.

It has nothing to do with shipping or any of the actual food. Taxes and rent in a big city are fucking expensive. It costs way more in rent and taxes to have a shop in downtown Manhattan than it does it bumfuck nowhere.
McDonalds actually doesn't do the regional pricing thing as much because they are a fucking real estate company that sells burgers. They make way more money off owning buildings and land than they do slinging their shitty burgers

>THE ONLY FUCKING TACO BELL IN MY AREA HAS HAD MOBILE ORDERING TURNED OFF FOR 3 WEEKS STRAIGHT
My taco bell used to pull this bullshit and I complained to corporate and they got their shit together real fast. I think they just do it because they are lazy and don't want to take any additional orders. They also "turned off" a bunch of newer menu items so you couldn't order them on the app for awhile but they have them all on now.

Maybe it's faster that way, but every delivery service piles on so many extra charges that you end up paying double. $10 for Taco Bell is already ridiculous, I'm not paying $20 after delivery fee, service fee, and tip. And that doesn't change the fact that drive thrus are slower than ever. Fast food is a scam for stupid people who can't cook for themselves.

The thing is, Zoomers can't read.
No, really, they're literally illiterate.
I don't know how that works.
They're on their phones all the time, so you'd think they'd know how to like, read words, but no.
It genuinely disturbs me because I don't get it, it doesn't make any sense.
How is it they can read text messages or whatever, but they can't read tickets?
Furthermore, why do they seem so confused all the time?
It fucks with me because my grandma had dementia in her last years, and the sort of confusion she exhibited appears to be the same thing I see in the eyes of zoomers when I try to train them at my workplace.
That shit keeps me up at night. Like what the fuck?!

You either aren't very bright or you're not arguing in good faith. Fast food is still incredibly cheap and its not going anywhere. Its much more likely that supermarkets will continually go more and more out of style along with home cooking as the supply chain continues to fracture, and the only food options you'll have will be fast food or grocery delivery from the warehouse to your door.

there aren't many things I order from the fast food landscape anymore. it was the declining quality and the skyrocketing prices that caused my habits to shift, and I'm talking about 2 or 3 years ago not just now with the inflation. the last straw for me was in March 2021 I ordered 3 quarter pounder meals from McDicks (for 3 of us, not myself) - 3 burgers, 3 medium fry, 3 medium drinks. it was 33 dollars. never again.

I used to enjoy Wendy's but just a chicken sandwich and medium fry alone is $11

>Fast food is still incredibly cheap
It's mostly not. Most people in this thread were all citing deals and offers. The vast majority of fast food menu items are no longer cheap and are becoming dangerously close to restaurant prices. The dynamic has most definitely shifted.

I understand what you're saying but there have been confirmed instances of shilling on /v/. I know what ROI is but I question how much it really matters for shilling because you cant really measure ROI for /v/ either.
