As a Connecticut Yankee who will plan trips around stopping at waffle house, I have often pondered this very question. While I think there is some credence to hometown diner culture, I think it's more likely the numbers don't add up. Its too expensive to operate on the waffle house business model in blue states.
Even if they did expand north, it would probably suck because people are mean and heroin/catholic country is different than meth/protestant country.
Also our blacks are way more integrated and entitled.

Why is waffle house so expensive? Like 2 tiny waffles with some almonds and some hashbrowns run you around 15$
I could go to some hipster brunch place and get the same thing with bigger waffles for that price.
I figured it would be dirt cheap but it's fucking not.

so does the South, Ihop is more comparable to Dennys(with worst service) as a sit down restaurant that specializes in breakfast than Waffle House as a 24 hour diner, Huddle House is probably the closest comparison

you're... mostly right. or what you're saying makes very much sense, at least. but the problem with many northern blacks is southern values. the great migration is not such distant history that most people have forgotten their roots, although, being raised a northern white I didn't understand, until adulthood, how visceral that connection was.
even up north I think people have more in common than they do apart, truly, in my bones I think that's true. but northern blacks ARE southern transplants, even on two generations on, and that causes many problems. I wish we could just give the whole of South Carolina and, either Georgia or Mississippi but not both, over to them and let them stay there. Southern Whites in the North are not better, but at least susceptible to wizened Northerner ways, and thus manipulable.

I was once on a train back to Illinois from New Orleans though, and was in the social-car when a group of Chicagoan black men saw, from the window, a black man riding a horse down the streets of Yazoo City, Mississippi. I'd hardly heard anyone clown harder, laugh louder. It was great.

I live in PA and there's one right off the exit to the highway.
And no we're not a southern state, even if there's a good deal of Confederate Battle Flags around here.

Interesting that there are almost an equal number of IHOP and Waffle House in Virginia. Also, didn't realize there are actually more Waffle Houses than IHOPs total.
