I thought about blowing the money on an hg-1 prime and argos back in march but went with the wugsweet instead. If you're talking valuewise then the f58 is very hard to beat. >> No.18226006

I need help troubleshooting an off flavor and I can't find a good reference for flavor descriptions of specific compounds to rigorously work it out for myself. I don't really know how to describe it, annoyingly. Perhaps chemical. It seems to be kinda common in that I've noticed it in many people's coffee brewed at home but I also noticed what I think was the same thing when working in a kitchen with an open pitcher of iced coffee kept in the fridge for too long. It's apparent in fresh hot coffee but seems to become more obvious with storage whether left to get stale or as iced coffee or cold brewed. I'm guessing it to either be poor cleaning (drip brewer or grinder) or oxygen exposure, possibly both? Do contaminating stale oils get worse over time after brewing?

I need to get control over my brewing process with my own shit since I've always been at least somewhat reliant on others' stuff but specific direction would be helpful. Whether it's a grinder that I can be certain doesn't have filthy internals or a cold brewing vessel that is air tight.

Doesn't hurt your pocket to wait and I assume flair has their 58 supply pretty well built out at this point not like they're going to become scarce if you break down. Yes oils go rancid over time. Yes most people buy shit tier coffee thats gone rancid in the bag. Probably starts to stink in the fridge as the oils at the surface oxidize further. Same goes for lipton.

I think that's not the case here though I suppose I left it vague that I could have been drinking coffee made by total retards.
>in the fridge as the oils at the surface oxidize further
What kinda timeframe are we talking, though? Say it's two week old oils sticking around in the grinder, they get brewed and then stored. We talking it goes from noticeable to vile in the space of a few hours in an open pitcher or twelve in a not-fully sealed all-in-one cold brewer?

Most importantly, what do rancid oils /taste like/? I don't have the experience to say that that's what's wrong here. I'm guessing.

I'm saying its years old oil sticking around in the grind path and months old oils on the dark roast beans. I clean my burrs whenever I grind up more developed coffee for my buddy to french press because that roastier flavor carries over into my lighter beans.
>what do rancid oils /taste like/
Sour, skunky, chemical, stale, off. You know that weird funk when you bring up olive oil too high? Degraded oils being exposed to oxygen.

So I got Monarch and Eclipse from Onyx, their two offerings suitable for espresso. Cool packaging. Along with the size and price, these guys are definitely presenting themselves as luxury coffee.

Eclipse is crap. Sorry. It's on the dark side of medium, just before oils showing. Not much taste or body. Not worth buying. You'll forget it even while you're drinking it.

Monarch, on the other hand, is definitely worth a try. Natural ethiopian + washed latin american blend. It's a medium roast, and so far the lightest one I've enjoyed as a straight shot. The acidity is pleasant, and seems "right" with the spicy flavors. Good blend.

But Onyx says this:
>Monarch is our house espresso for beverages 12 ounces and larger.
>Monarch is bold and defiant and tends to stand out in beverages of milk that have a volume of 12oz or more.
My ass. I guess this counts as bold to hipsters who have never tasted a dark roast, but this is buried eight feet deep in even eight ounces of milk. In anything starbucks-size it's gonna be undetectable.
Still good light-bodied blend though. Enjoyable as straight espresso, lungo, probably cappucino, even in a latte it added a vague long-lingering sense of cherry compot. Nice.

>> No.18230217

Here's how I make my instant coffee everyday, it took me years of gradually changing it to come to this point where it's just solid.
I always drink it cold so all I need is a French press and my 5 gram spoon to make it.
>pour 100ml of water in the carafe
>add a heaping spoon of Davidoff fine aroma (spoon is 5g level so this way it's like 7 grams or so)
>add two level spoonfuls of sugar
>hold the French press by the handle and swish it around churning the coffee and dissolving the sugar fully
>add 200ml of cold milk
>pour and drink.
I know of the retardation in using a French press to make instant cold coffee but it werks for me.

Neat, thanks.

Stuff like the Flair Neo is super cheap and [allegedly] can brew some really good coffee, what's the catch? "Tedious workflow" sounds pretty vague, isn't this the same process of heating up water, putting your grounds in a portafilter, making the shot, repeat?

>> No.18238114

>>18238092
>Flair Neo
The base flair neo is a pressurized basket, meant for preground coffee/people with shitty grinders. You can buy a normal basket for it and be set. You won't have to grind as fine since most flair baskets(other than the standard sized 58) will be taller and skinnier. The downside with the flairs(again, other than the 58) is that the tedious workflow means heating up metal parts seperately so they don't steal your brew water's heat. I used to just drop the cylinder in a yeti cup and let it sit in a round or two of kettle water, but this is the newer method people use now. You can pull great espresso cheap, but realize you're going to be doing shit like this every time. Adds a couple minutes to your "workflow" whereas on a boiler based machine you're going to be waiting for the boiler to heat the entire machine. Less work, more waiting.

I assume I was gripping too hard so the glue between came loose or maybe there was never any glue and it was always a little loose. The other problem is I don't have little chink hands so my grip was larger than the rubber. All problems some tape fixes though you will want non stick scissors if you care about aesthetics/not having shit overlap. Personally I like the k1 a lot since it works great for medium-medium fine and I can just fill it up and know that's 25g of coffee and not have to weigh beans. Also can always start my kettle and do a grind before it's done no problem.

Channelling is a pain and though they're something of a meme, the wire distribution tools people are turning to are fucking great at reducing how often you'll get channelling - you can make one cheaply if you've got a 3D printer, or you can buy inexpensive ones. Someone posted this on discord last night so I'll just steal it and add a bit. You can add pressure gauges to flairs and the robots later. I'd imagine shipping from hong kong is going to drive the price up on the robot's gauge, so probably better to just order it all together. Robot also has weird deep proprietary 57.5mm baskets so I think only their leveling tamper works? Flair has a us warehouse, a bunch of importers and a bunch of people making aftermarket tampers and shit.
>The good thing with the Flair machines is the modularity, you can upgrade the Neo to the Signature by buying the bottomless basket and the pressure gauge kit, this is the ceiling of the Neo model, if you go for the Classic you can upgrade to the Pro 2 brew head that allow you to go for larger doses in the basket.

My unit came with both pressurized and non, but I did get another bottomless portafilter and an additional bigger ims basket. I got the df64 grinder because niche was impossible to get, while also being quite affordable. I do use wdt which helps a bit, while metal water screens does jack all for me. Probably included taper is just a tiny bit small and hard to use, it always channel mostly on a few holes on the outer rim. Figured I already got most good value buys already, which is why I wonder if I’m already at the point of diminishing returns and what’s the ceiling/possible.

if i grind as fast as i can i can grind 30g in 20 seconds.
