Fresh turmeric tastes pretty good. It's like a combination of ginger and orange. Turmeric powder tastes bland and bitter for some reason. If you can't get fresh turmeric I'd just use ginger instead.

Turmeric powder doesn't sell very quickly, and you tend to use small amounts. By the time you buy it, it's probably sat on the store shelf for years, and you're probably using the same jar of it that you've used your whole life.
