Spent a year in Japan studying and honestly they really aren't cunts about food. Housewives can be a bit much with it I feel, but they're just competing and trying to one up one another more than anything else, a man who can even fry an egg is going to get showered in compliments anyway.
Other students in the dorm were always happy with the miso soup and rice I made. I mostly cooked western stuff outside of that, but you're basically set there if you can prepare those two staples to a satisfactory degree.
I've found Italians to be more showy with how much they want to reject anyone else trying to cook their foods. I think the difference is that while the Japanese might believe in #1 samurai master bullshit, they still accept a well cooked meal as good. Italians will just say anyone who isn't nonna has destroyed whatever dish it is they're cooking.

It's literally just a marketing ploy, that's it. Japs get asshurt when their simple cuisine can be replicated by anyone in the world, so they try to put this bullshit cultural importance on it, as if you need decades of practice to properly roll up some fucking rice or cook fish.
Notice how you never see frognigger chefs going "French cuisine takes le lifetime to masteur hon hon hon." They'll say it's the best in the world (because they're French) but they'll never spout off the same bullshit Japs do, because it's actually difficult to replicate French dishes because of the skill and technicals required.
You can teach someone with 0 experience how to cut fish and how to roll it up in sushi. Try taking the average boomer and teaching them to make a macaroon.
And of course fucking weebs eat it up and pay $85 for a bowl of $1 beef stock, noodles, egg, and fatty pork.
