Why the fuck do you think those are any better? Same "limited evidence" and garbage studies. Worse, they can easily get too hot in transport and that kills all the bacteria. Even if they're alive, they're in some inactive dried state and might not revive well. Manufacturers don't care because people will placebo effect themselves into believing something is happening and supplements are barely regulated.

Probiotic foods are actually more reliable since they at least have to follow a cold chain and the bacteria are active. But live ferments are obviously the best since you can smell/taste whether they're active or not. The only pills that are worth it are shipped direct with cooling

Bought a scoby and followed one of the many starter recipes online. Let it go one week. Tasted it and it was semi-sweet and sour; an indication that it was done. Put it in some bottles with fruit juice equal to about 15g of sugar. It has now gone overnight and the bottles have no pressure built up. Carbonation does not appear to be taking place. I'm using plastic bottles so its easy to tell if its carbonated or not without burping. By all accounts, it should be an active ferment and its not.

I usually let mine sit 2-4 days depending on temp before it has enough carbonation. It also depends if you shook it around before bottling. When I don't do that I get very uneven carbonation between each bottle. I'm guessing the parts that ferment are unevenly placed.

I could go on but you get the point. Shut the fuck up if you don't know what you're talking about. Live bacteria produce various toxins, an imbalance of intestinal bacteria can cause all sorts of problems (such as various candida species, which are commonly found in kefir and kombucha), and if your digestive system isn't performing as efficiently as it should be (most people's aren't) then probiotic bacteria can start growing in your small intestine rather than your colon which causes a wide variety of issues.
