It's called geographic tongue. There's no cure but it's not all that bad.

I have a severe case. My ability to handle certain powerful flavors is always in flux: spicy, tannins, alcohol, and hops. On good days I can eat any spicy food without issues, habaneros are nothing to me. On bad days a flaming hot cheeto could make me cry. It makes life more interesting, sometimes frustrating but mostly interesting. Its become more stable now that I'm in my 30s.

Could be gone forever, could come back tomorrow, or anywhere in between. You could also end up with permanently altered senses and everything might taste weird or bad. I just got over COVID last week, first time having it, I coughed maybe 4 times and my nose ran a very small amount, no taste or smell loss. My brother, aunt, mother, cousin, other brother, friend, etc all lost taste whenever they had it and they were back to normal within a few months. Good luck.

On this note does anyone else actually lose their taste and smell from the common cold? It happens every single time I have a cold (no, not COVID, this has been happening for 25 years.)

My friend was explaining this to me yesterday.
He got it a month ago and at this point it's weakened to the point he can taste again, but it still lingers. He says it actually adds to the flavor at this point.
He compared it to going to a seafood place and getting pasta, you still get a breath of salty fish even if it's just pasta. I'm not a huge fan of diet soda but I sometimes I can appreicate how it can feel like someone added antimatter to my coke. It adds a unique air to the flavor.

in all likelihood some people probably suffer permanent nerve damage, they tried to play it down in the beginning as it was just "helper cells" that will grow back but later real non TV experts began to say it could be much worse

i'm experiencing prolonged sensory issue, most smells are back, most tastes, but not everything is 100%, from my experience I would say depending on how much inflammation you felt and for how long in your sinus region might clue you in on how badly the virus attacked your olfactory nerves - i never suffered any respiratory issues from covid, mine presented as a sinus infection for 2 maybe 3 days, in the beginning I though it was just a typical sinus infection you might get from swimming but the tests confirmed I had covid, it's been well of a year since i had it

i've done everything everyone's recommended from taking certain supplements, smell therapy to the retarded burnt orange and brown sugar gimmick
