>>17960792
oh ok. yeah the aeropress papers are cheap as fuck. do they work better in your moka pot or are you just trying out filters in it?
my mother swears by a moka pot, wondering if I should send her some.

>> No.17960878

>>17960797
i saw hoffmeme use them once i think so i decided to try them out and while i was dialing in my rok grinder i ground like 200g way too fine to use in a regular moka(i made some and it tasted good but the cup was just full of grounds) so i just put them in an airtight container and put it in the back of the cupboard. when i got my filters i also got an E&B Labs moka pot which comes with a competition filter which has much smaller holes than a regular moka filter.
so i tested these now 2 weeks old grounds in both the old pot with a aeropress filter, the new pot with smaller filter and aeropress filter and the new pot without aeropress filter.
the filter did its job in the old pot and made a clean brew that had little to no oil in it, the new pot with filter was about the same but the pressure was much higher because of the smaller filter + aeropress filter and i thought the coffee tasted pretty much the same. the new pot no aeropress filter tasted the best but did have a couple of grounds in it but it wasn't really noticeable.
i realised this wasn't a fair test of the aeropress filters because this was old coffee that wasn't really built for a moka pot, so i ground coffee for the same test but at the right size for moka and i had pretty much the same results (but obviously the coffee tasted significantly better in every method) so i figured i just wasn't into the flavor that this method with the filter produces, it wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't for me. im sure if you love a really clean and clear taste to your coffee you would probably like this. but it wasn't for me.
also the E&B Labs moka pot (i got the 6 cup version) is fantastic, i think every moka lover should use one. im sure most of the work is being done by the E&B Labs competition filter but the pot itself is also much higher quality than others i have seen.

i would be interested to see if others do these same tests and get similar results.
(the old moka pot had been fully cleaned btw)

Im torn between Niche Zero and Eureka Mignon Oro.

On one hand the Niche looks like a great grinder to use. Just chuck the beans in and thats it - no worries about retention, static or anything else, easy to adjust between settings with the dial. Overall makes espresso with good body and has quite a forgiving range.

However, the Oro with its flat burrs seems to be able to provide much more clarity and really bring out the flavours of the coffee. That being said, a lot of the early reviews were critical. It seems like Eureka have done some work to improve problem areas such as noice, vibration and retention but its hard to get past.

My heart tells me get the Oro, but my head tells me get the Niche.

Water should be fine to descale your Nespresso (TM) Podmaster Machine. Unless you got it as a gift, a cheapo French Press along with supermarket whole bean coffee, and even a blade grinder are better and fresher. As /ctg/ has maybe shown you, you can get really autistic about coffee. But a French Press, basic whole bean coffee and a blade grinder are enough to get better results for now. Your blender may even have a mini grinder cup too. A burr grinder down the line would give you a more consistent grind.

buy the hario cold brew pot from amazon. it's the cheapest next step for good coffee. you won't even need cream or sugar, just regular milk at a 1:1 ratio or for a less strong, 2 parts milk to 1 part cold brew. and you can have it hot by microwaving it for ~45 seconds without impacting on taste, and because it's cold brew it's not acidic and won't give you the coffee shits.

I've been enjoying my espresso machine for the past year and a half, however, I am thinking of moving back to filter coffee after all. The coffee is plainer sure, blander even, but every day life is blander. It's like espresso is just a bit too much for every day, and it's hard stop taking cup after cup while with filter coffee it's easier to stop since you would have to put on another pot. Several tiimes the amount of liquid per caffeine also. Also since it filters out the oils that raise cholesterol it's meant to be healthier.

A few hours early or later than 24 won't matter. There has been some scientific research done on the topic and it found that all the measurable extraction of the most important elements in cold brew is done within 8 hours. Doing it with a 24 hour cycle was found to be mostly convenience. Doing it 30+ hours is likely a waste of time and could impact on taste, as anecdotal reports will have some people say "yeah it went bitter, yeah it went metallic" others will be "tasted fine".
One small note is that unlike coffee made with boiling/high pressure water, there is a non-negligible chance of food safety issues with cold brew. In the studies I looked at it was something like ~10% of samples having microbes/bacteria that could cause illness. They were all insignificant amounts unlikely to be dangerous but it wasn't non-existent.
As such, I would always leave it in the fridge while steeping and transfer it to a new jug for storage, and make smaller batches that are used up within a week at most, and immediately dump it anytime it smells or tastes funny in the days after brewing. It's not like people are dying all over the world because of cold brew so it's not really dangerous but it's like people undercooking mince/burgers, why take additional risk, by the law of large numbers at some point some-one is probably going to get really sick from cold brew (or from side effects) because that risk does exist. Minimise it so it's not you.

I'm not sure it would matter, the risk stated was very low.
It was only a small percentage of all samples of the coffee, and those samples weren't at dangerous levels and the samples needed 5 days before anything showed up. Introduction of potential contaminants could happen in the bean harvesting process when they leave for packing, or they could happen in the grind stage, which could happen at a factory or in your own home.
I'd suspect there would be more a chance of contamination from poorly washed storage jugs or what you drink the finished coffee in.

Is it possible for a person's digestive tract to become adapted to whatever chemicals are in coffee?
>Never a coffee drinker in my life

I'm hoping my system gets used to not having coffee because I really don't like it any more.

Straight up not true. Can't speak for NA but certainly in Aus and EU most of the highest grade roasts tend to be for filter. Filter has a much higher ceiling in terms of quality of coffee, despite the popularity of espresso. If your filter is bland I'd suggest you either change how you're brewing or source some better beans.

I do home brewing so my keg is cross purpose between serving stouts and nitro coffee. It's great to have at home and really easy to do, but the main difficulty is keeping it chilled. By the time you have a mini keg plus the gas and tap attachment on top, it's going to take up a lot of space in your fridge.

Personally I'd look for cream whipper type dispensers if I was going to buy one specifically for coffee. Maybe around 1L. Should be enough for 4 drinks.

Also, I'm not sure where you plan to buy nitrogen from but where I am, there are about £1 per mini canister and that probably does 1L of liquid.

Basic calcs for my espresso:
Upfront cost of buying equipment: $800 dollars
How much coffee I use per expresso: 14g
Price of coffee per lb (~454 g): $15
Cost of beans per espresso: $0.46, rounded to $0.50 for water costs

f(x) = 800 + 0.5x

Cost of espresso at coffee shop: $2-3 per

f(y) = 2y
f(z) = 3z

So I will break even at 320-533 espressos. Maybe I can say that an espresso at a coffee shop costs more because I have to expend time/transportation costs to go there

How the fuck do I make cold brew iced coffee? I'd like to recreate something close to Starbucks' because it's pretty good and I can drink it on its own but mine comes out way more bitter and nowhere near as sweet. What I currently do is
>grind 2 cups coffee beans in burr grinder on coarse
>add 2 L water in big jug and mix
>steep for 12 hours in fridge
>pass it through a sieve to remove the biggest parts, then through french press and put it back into the cleaned out jug
>add water to make it 1 part coffee 1 part water
But it comes out a little bitter and not sweet at all unlike what all the online stuff says about cold brew being sweet. It's also cloudy with coffee dust it feels like. I think part of the problem might be the burr grinder makes dust as a byproduct which gets into the mix and affects flavor/cloudiness but Idk.

Have you tried with milk (oat or cow)? I don't enjoy cold brew when it's diluted by water. It could also be a process issue where the sieve & french press isn't doing enough. Or as you say the grinder is dusting your coffee up.
I'd considering buying the Hario Mizudashi MCPN-14CBR which makes it really simple to brew. Get a decent looking (but not too expensive) 8 or 10 oz of pre-ground to go with it. You'll get 3 brews out of either of those (obviously 10oz will be a bit stronger) of about 1 litre each. I haven't even bought any special 'coarse' coffee. I've only had minimal 'sludge' at the bottom of the jug. I don't even really need to filter it (which I can do with a v60 over the jug I store it in).

That's more than enough. Make some coffee, let it cool down and then make the iced coffee with ice. Add cream and sugar and you're done. If you really want a smooth iced coffee with none of the sludge and coffee oils, you'll have to go with filter options such as a pour over. The French Press' appeal is that it requires nothing but water and ground coffee to work.

I always suspected there was instant coffee or a really, really fine grind coffee in the pod things. There's no other way for non-pressurized hot water to extract anything resembling coffee to come out of those things in 30 seconds. I don't really understand how these things penetrated the home market. It makes sense in an office, but at home? Nah. It's really bad coffee for the price.

For pourover coffee, especially if you're using thinner filter papers the bloom is where you extend the total brew time. When the coffee foams up, forming a bubbly lattice texture, the hot water is allowed to saturate and swell the grounds, giving you a combo steep/percolation method. I don't think stirring or swirling it down is helpful at all. I recommend just letting it sit undisturbed for 60-120 seconds before the second pour. The second pour breaks the crust. I dunno.

nice photo.
i just didnt like the other shit around the glass of coffee in the first pic. like i guess that could symbolise the flavors of the coffee but it just feels like im looking at an ad or something.
sure if im being charitable a brown liquid with ice could be a ton of shit ok put some coffee beans next to it but the vanilla bean and the cinnamon and almonds like really dude.

but this picture is better because it just makes sense. i dont need to have random shit in the picture to tell me what im looking at, all the objects tell me the story of why this exists. and while this could be used as an ad to sell anything in this pic i dont feel like im being sold something. this feels like an organic expression of the person who made this coffee."damn i just made a great cup of coffee, oh i should take a picture for people and share what i just did" like yeh this dude has just made this cup and has put it down in his work area, there was no time to clean up and take some scripted picture.
i could be 100% wrong about this picture and yeh it could have been set up to look this way and all the lighting is fake or whatever but it just feels like this was taken in the moment which is why i think it is a better shot and im not mad that it exists.
