I learned to cook when I was 5, by the time I was 12 I was the family grill master. And mom always asked me to make cheese cake for parties because my cheese cake is the best cheese cake.

My 6 year old nephew even knows how to make scrambled eggs. He and his 4 year old brother literally snuck out to the chicken coup brought back eggs and cooked and ate them all. Like a dozen eggs between a 4 and 6 year old. Kinda impressive.

This is how i learned to cook as a kid, by experimenting adding stuff to the hamburger helper I was making for dinner.

To learn to use the stove, I would learn to scramble eggs. Grease the pan with butter or oil and make it hot. Crack a few eggs into the pan and break and stir it around. Your first few attempts aren't going to look so good, but then you try again and get better at it.

Pasta is a good way to learn about boiling water on the stovetop. If you're not a pasta guy, dumplings are a good way to go too.

The most important thing about using cutlery is to make sure that your fingers are not underneath the knife. Keep the chopping motion of the blade away from you and your face. For this, making stirfrys and stews are a good way to go. Chop vegetables in large chunks and chop up some sausages and fry them in a large skillet with a fatty thing like butter, grease, or oil. Such things go great with potatoes too.

Some things will cook better if cooked separate from others before mixing them in later on.

Cooking recipes are a good reference, but by no means do they have to be the only way to go. There are many ways to cook the same dish. Granted some ways are better than others, but you'll discover that as you go.

The internet is the best recipe book and a great source for talking about cooking techniques. But do look at several sources on the same technique if you aren't sure and look for the common ground.
