I initially found one cap loose in a bunch of leaves and it looks like there's at least 4 more in the ground. should I harvest everything now or leave them undisturbed? also whats the best way to store them longterm?

Dehydrate

>>17837539
You may want to leave one behind, but they'll likely be gone if you leave them all.(deer LOVE them)
Better to split them open and soak in salt water(to get the bugs out) for an hour or so, then dredge in flour and fry in BUTTER ONLY.
Giant puffballs are good to eat too, if they are fresh--They are like the Tofu of mushrooms.
sliced 1'' thick, fried in butter also, they will pick up the flavor of any herbs and spices you add to the butter.

>> No.17837641

how long can they keep in the fridge/freezer before dehydration?

>>17837631

>> No.17837649

>>17837641
if they look really clean(bug free) you really don't even have to. just rinse.
No more than overnight in the fridge though
An hour or 2 should be fine.
Don't forget to GPS the spot-- they are pretty hard to find sometimes--AND DON"T TELL ANYONE ELSE WHERE, or you'll never get on again.

>> No.17837670

pick them, toss them around to release spores so you can possibly grow more, don't tell anyone where they are. rinse them in salt water. ive come to notice morels love dead elm trees. is there one near where you found these?

>> No.17837676

>>17837667
give it another week or two--THEN clean up--(nice yardwork out, huh?)
If you do dehydrate some, maybe see if you can get a spore print from the smallest., that way you can place the spawn where you want it next time.
Plenty of info on the weebs.

>> No.17837684

and sometimes around patches of may-apples if Trilliums are around.
Good info-
Better to take the spore print yourself, then mix with distilled water and a little molasses then spray the spawn where you want it.

Try to duplicate the same in an area of your yard that won't be disturbed for next year.
Morels are notoriously hard to cultivate a mycelial mass for good fruiting bodies.
but NOT impossible.

I order to properly identify you a mushroom you need to take pictures of the surrounding area as well.

Also if you do decide to harvest them don't just rip them up like some barbarian.
Get a pair of scissors, or sheers, and cut it just above the base. This will allow the mushrooms to grow back eventually
