Growing up my family would take trips to upstate New York and we'd stop in Woodstock. There was this candy store where they carried old time candies, I always got either pic related or the ones that look like little blackberries and raspberries with crunchy candy on the outside and chewy centers.

this thread reminds me of one time many years ago I went to england and visited a candy store, it was full of old people and all them grabbing un-wraped candies from boxes with their sweaty wrinkled hands, one lady had one of those ugly small dogs, she put it on the floor and proceeded to touch every candy she could reach, I was beyond disgusted. I wasn't a fan of them because they damn near always were totally fused with the wrapper to the point that you couldn't eat them without also having to eat bits of the paper.
Like it wasn't just stuck, parts of the paper would melt into the candy then bits would get stuck in the inside, as parts of the candy peaked through the wrapper, sometimes meaning that the whole candy had to be thrown away because it picked up lint and dirt.

Then you spend all that effort trying to separate the fused wrapper and candy only to get a frankly mediocre peanut caramel.

While I don't find the candy it's self disgusting from a taste perspective, it is a candy I avoid if given the option.
