What is your most recent purchase?
Are the bongs aware that the tariffs on American whiskey are now gone? It was at 25%, so hopefully the distilleries lower their prices for you guys.

I'm holding the 6 Iles and Dailuaine for a trip before too long so I just got the Ben Nevis and Ardmore today instead. Adelphi is a 700ml again... although very nice for only 5 years old and nearly 60% abv.(drinks better than my Knob Creek single barrel that's nearly 3 times its age)the sherry is quite full in the experience and as this is my first Ben Nevis, I'm not entirely sure what the distillery character is, but there is a lot great umami flavors like a restaurant grade teriyaki. it would've been nice if it were $20 cheaper, but for a once in a lifetime purchase, absolutely worth it. poured a little Glenallachie 10 Batch 6 next to it because they both have lots of Olorosso influence as well as noticeable balsamic thing. in comparison the Glenallachie is very fruity and the Nevis being more tea like with its complexity, dry and herbal.

Ardmore is very nice as well albeit in a more simple way, pure bourbon sweetness and slight salty finish and the perfect amount peat smoke(burning leaves). poured a little Teachers next to it and all I got was grain in comparison with very minute sour apple and milk chocolate notes.

FYI: The burn is caused by the alcohol, I believe. But it might be the corn. To legally be called bourbon, it has to have at least 51% corn grain in its mash bill. So, you might be having an adverse reaction to the taste of the corn-based alcohol.

So, try some other types of whiskey or alcohol. Scotches and Irish whiskies are usually very different from American bourbons. I recommend trying Redbreast 12, an Irish whiskey, or try any of the peated Scotches. I guarantee that Ardbeg Wee Beastie will not taste anything like any bourbon you will ever try.

Handle of Old Crow, shit is so cheap it feels like I stole the shit. Works great as a mixer & its decent for shots. They don't. The board is mainly American, and they come here arguing over their bottom tier trash and then get mad when anyone mentions a bottom tier scotch because that would be a price bracket up for them. Basically nobody has taken on board that price matters, and it varies widely across regions (worse for bourbon, which will also vary in quality across regions). Even though this becomes blatantly obvious whenever someone argues scotch vs bourbon or recommends Diageo (which seems to have scam pricing across the USA).
tl;dr Everyone who says X is good is usually saying it would be hard to find something better at X's price (where they live), and they're usually wrong (because I don't live there).

I had a long conversation with one of my local stores owners and he said that its like a rat race. Who can sell the most and do the most volume in order to get those Pappys, Birthday bourbon etc. These bottles are then used as tools and sold to those few customers who do 1000 or more a year as a reward to keep them coming back (not always the case but most do this). They've done it to me before, they use bait like Blanton's or Eagle Rare to bait you in then BAM your hooked. Where typical mass market whiskeys like Jameson ever "good," or have they always been extremely mediocre? I sipped some for the first time in a while recently, and it got me thinking about how many enthusiasts claim the average quality of whisky offerings has dropped somewhat over the decades due to brand consolidation and more tendency to lean on marketing/hype.

I know I've heard that Johnny Walker for instance was once a much better product.

most bourbon whisky has some 'spicyness' to it sort of similar to pepper. If you really want something non alcoholic tasting, smoothish whisky you could try scotch whisky. Speyside whisky's are very beginner friendly and go down very easy. Some examples are Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Glen Morray.
If you want to try bourbon but the ethanol taste is a bit much add an ice cube or just a few drops water. WT101 has quite the high ABV for a starter so it's not crazy the ethanol stood out

The spicy flavor or bourbon comes from the rye in the mash, so more rye gives you more spice.

Bourbon also has a syrup or butter texture or taste which comes from being aged in new charred maple barrels. That’s my favorite part of bourbon. You can find that taste a bit in other whiskeys that have been aged in used bourbon barrels, but it’s much more pronounced in bourbon.
