Apparently a lime wedge in the neck is supposed to keep flies out of your beer.

Makes shit beer taste like okay beer

Proper refrigeration wasn't available in places far from even small cities so beer tasted like ass. Adding lime and other stuff made them taste nice. This was in the 50's but there still are people that will deliberately leave beer in direct sunlight for that shit taste

Aren't beer cocktails a think that's been around forever? Lime and mexican lagers is a great combination, probably happened because they had a bunch of lime. You add lime to most things in coastal mexican dishes.

This.
Originally, flavor was secondary “side effect”. The practice began as a way to keep dirt/bugs/whatever from getting into your bottle of beer when drinking in dirty locations.
Now it’s just customary.
Though I’ve also been to shithole bordertown dive bars in Mexico, where the original use is still valid.

There are a few theories as to michelada origin.
I like to think it was just some random Mexican who one day thought “damn, I want a Bloody Mary but all I have is beer and tequila and it would taste like shit with tequila.”
