just got back with the Batch 6(last one at the store) and man that Rioja cask really pokes its head out and is almost like red wine vinegar on the nose. takes some water to tone down the youth a bit. plenty of spice from the Olorosso. pretty good, still prefer the Batch 2 though. 15 is finally beginning to open up and I got some cigar wrapper and cocoa which is nice because I had read that the Batch 6 was supposed to have a good amount of espresso notes but I didn't get any or even any chocolate with it yet. Hadn't had a drink in a week so its possible that it was to much too fast.

What about the best Irish whiskey for mixing?
I personally really like standard Maker's Mark for cocktails. Affordable, but delicious.

After getting into whisky I'd say most people don't actually like whisky. Most men who consider themselves whisky drinkers can't name a brand that exists outside of sports advertisements. At least women don't try to front.

I'd rather go whisky tasting with a woman who has never tried whisky over a man who bases part of their identity by only drinking Jameson or Jack.

15 gallon barrels are the most similar to 53 gallon barrels in terms of how much surface area is touching the whiskey.
Make sure that your barrel staves have been seasoned for at least 9 months to a year then charred to preferably #4.

"nicer" Makers would probably just be the 46 or a pick, MAYBE as they are generally bland and basic, so wheaters dont really benefit from high proof in my experience, but a higher age one that's well managed is probably going to be the best way to go albeit a pain in the dick to get from both an availability standpoint AND price wise. makers 46 works because it has no rye in the mash bill so any complexity from the grain is gone and that bitter/spicy French oak part takes place of the rye. cask strength OG Makers will just be higher intensity of the regular flavors, of which there just ain't that much of to start with; definition of a mixer.

if you can spare $100 or so, get yourself a half dozen decent bottles and pour some of each the first nite and compare and contrast to really be able to see differences between them. nosing glass is a big help as well.

the banana note is closer to totally overripe bananas you would use only for making banana bread. it sticks out like a sore thumb to me and makes Jack basically undrinkable outside the courtesy swig around others. cherry just isnt a flavor I get from bourbon virtually ever because all the others flavors are so much heavier between the oak char, vanillins, corn caramels and rye spices. on rare occasion theres a bitter orange or purple grape flavor but that's the extent of fruits in bourbon for me.

However, I don't do that because I enjoy drinking. If I had to drink the same scotch every time I wanted a whiskey drink I'd probably get sick of it really fast, just like one gets sick of having the same food over and over again.
