homemade turkish coffee is pretty satisfying to make, but im not a huge fan of the flavor or the drinking experience so these days i mostly use my turkish coffee pot to make hot chocolate(milk not water obviously) which is how i make my mocha when i have coffee that i dont really enjoy the taste of.

i use a moka pot because i just enjoy the process of making coffee with it. im thinking of buying a new one because mine has some flaws that will probably be the straw that breaks my back one day.

Luckily against all odds there's a halfway decent little local cafe in town, checking them out it's made me realize that the quickest way to tell if a cafe is worth a shit is by checking whether they have a cortado listed on their regular menu.

I have a K-plus and it's fantastic for pour over. Good tasting, external dial, 40g capacity, fast as fuck (45g at a medium grind in 60 seconds), and fits nicely in my hand. I don't know if this is the one reddit likes since I'm not gay.

In case anyone remembers or cares, I said that I would follow up about one of the gripes I had with the K-Plus–the calibration drift. Yeah, it stopped doing that. It was almost certainly the burrs breaking in. For months now zero means zero, no drift at all. Now I'm left with only one minor original gripe. The wooden knob handle is drilled ever slightly off-center. This is only apparent when I fidget spin the knob, so it's not a big deal. However, a new gripe has appeared! The rubbery grip on the barrel has begun to peel up at the seam from normal use. They ship the things with two 1Zpresso branded silicone ball cancer bracelets that you're supposed to use over the barrel, but I hate them. I have good grip strentgh and liked it better without them. But they probably knew that rubber shit comes off, hence their existence. I'm gonna have to figure out something decent as a long-term solution. Maybe gluing it back in place with silicone, or rewrapping it with some kind of handlebar tape. I dunno. For now I've covered it with thick broccoli/asparagus rubber bands. Interestingly, this is more comfortable than the original wrapping. There's gotta be some kind of rubbery handlebar or tennis raquet tape out there that will be the ideal solution. Anyone have suggestions?

>25 ounce coffee can claims it's enough for 195 6 ounce cups with 1 "rounded tablespoon" of coffee per cup, corresponding to a water to coffee ratio of about 1:49
>the recommended ratio for regular strength drip coffee is 1:17
>a tablespoon normally holds 7-9 grams of coffee according to various sources online
>calculating based on the ratio for regular strength coffee comes to 1.16-1.49 tablespoons per 6 ounces (177 mL) of water, which is similar to the 1 "rounded tablespoon" measurement given on the coffee can, however calculating with that same ratio based on the amount of coffee in the can means comes out with only 68 cups
>to hit the 195 cup mark, they'd need to be using tablespoons that only throw 3.63 grams with a "rounded tablespoon"
>decide to weigh tablespoons of coffee myself
>weigh 5 leveled off tablespoons and average 4.28 grams per tablespoon with a low of 4 grams and a high of 4.52 grams

I guess it makes sense, as long as you don't use plastic funnels. Also uses less tools.
I still like the Mokapot idea. Look how well it fits into base of a 4cup unit.

I wish they included strips in the kit, instead of the spout. I'll probably never use the spout, since watching the flow is a part of the fun.

>I still like the Mokapot idea. Look how well it fits into base of a 4cup unit.
Steam preheating on your kettle is just that method distilled down. No extra burner and you're running a kettle already. I had already sold my signature for the 58 by the time that got popular so I don't have direct experience with it. Sometimes if I'm in a hurry I'll balance my portafilter on top of the stagg to cut a few minutes off.
>I wish they included strips in the kit, instead of the spout. I'll probably never use the spout, since watching the flow is a part of the fun.
From what I've gathered the original flair designer/kickstarter guy is an ultraminimalist bozo who never foresaw flairs living permanently on counters. He wanted a unit that was able to travel with as few parts as possible. After the success of the kickstarter and development of the company, he just gets in fights with Andrew and their engineering team about stupid shit. OG kickstarter flairs you had to cut the fucking spout off to get bottomless because he didn't want to lose it while backpacking or some shit.

>The most important thing to wrap your head around here is that grind size doesn’t really change what is being extracted. It only changes when the things are extracted. All of the flavour is right there, in the coffee bean, ready to be extracted. Grind size just puts more or less of that flavour in front of the water right away.

>Every soluble component of coffee has a slightly different solubility (that sounds weird, but stick with me). Salts, sugars, acids, phenols, fats and lipids etc. all take different amounts of time to be dissolved by water. Some will be dissolved straight away, and others will need more time. We need to think about this when brewing coffee, because changing the contact time will also change which components of the coffee will be dissolved by the water. The first and most soluble parts of coffee are fruit acids and organic salts (light, bright, fruity flavours), closely followed by light aromatics created from the Maillard reactions and sugar browning during roasting (nuts, caramel, vanilla, chocolate, butter etc.) and lastly heavier organic matter (wood, ash, malt, tobacco etc.).
