Some of the born againers are really nutty, yeah. They're usually women too. I still think there's so few of them that I couldn't give much of a shit. As someone who went to a church that outsiders would unanimously call crazy, the people there are surprisingly normal and pretty nice. Nothing out of the ordinary. I don't like people who bitch about religion because all the religious people I've met and been around are very nice people and the non-religious ones usually aren't. And even if religious people believe in the most inane shit ever it really doesn't effect me as long as they aren't nagging me about it. I hear more nagging from commies or liberals, generally.

OP I'm converting right now after a very, very long road. I am not really concerned about traditions of men but respectfully I'm going to have fish tacos at a little taco shop run by Catholics this Friday. They do a daily special and fish is always for Friday. Then they serve them with rice and beans and the beans are cooked in lard.

It's a little silly, sure, and again I'm not going to get caught up in traditions. I'm going to practice instead. So I'll be cooking with a lot of fish in the future to honor the tradition as well.

I feel sorry for Latin-riters who have been stripped of their traditional fasting practices. Yes, the bare minimum is "No meat on fridays", but that's the bare minimum to remain a practicing Catholic in good standing. No reason you can't maintain the traditional Roman fasting rule.

>Early fasting practices were varied, but by the time of Gregory the Great, the ordinary rule on all fasting days was to take only one meal a day and that only in the evening (after sunset); and to abstain from meat of all sorts, white meats (that is, milk, butter, and cheese, called lacticinia in Latin sources),[16] eggs, and, in the early centuries, wine and oil. Consumption of fish and shellfish was usually, but not universally, allowed.

I can promise that following the ancient rule provides much more spiritual and disciplinary benefits then the modern rule that makes extreme concessions to modern laziness.

Sounds like ancient elites were trying to keep the poor in line and keep more for themselves like they do now with things like "eat da bugs cause da global warming climate change global cooling over population white guilt wear da mask or you're going to catch a cold zeitgeist"

Well, I'm not practicing and right now I can't find a church in my area as the ones around here are more about signaling virtue and acceptance than teaching. This does not really bother me and I am not "conservative" but I'd like to at least have a place to worship that is serious about Christ. I am hungry for knowledge. And fish tacos.

And, in the meantime, I'll try to eat more fish. I ... don't see an issue here, I love fish... the tradition seems a little silly to me, but I love Christmas too. I don't know why I would not participate if it was asked of me. Also, albacore tuna. That is delicious. Also sea bass.

>as consistent and powerful as the Gospels
>folk mythology eg Hinduism is typically riddled with loose ends
Non religious person here, but the gospels were written around the second century AD and translated/edited/translated/censored dozens of times in three different languages to end up in whatever form of the bible you read, while those original "folk" ~3200yo hindu vedas still exist in a language that's still spoken. Similar deal with the quran which was first written later around 600AD, but they didn't go through the same editing and censoring and bastardization process and church schisms. The message is still wack, but just be careful throwing stones around in a glass house. Having a "Muh Gospels" tier belief in christianity is the lowest form of gloating. Educate yourself, friend. Read the gospels for fun and casual life advice, but see the holes and don't judge those who are already ahead of you in not living by it's "standards"

Read them again and with real intention. He will speak to you then. What you have heard for years as whispers will become a voice. You will recognize word as law. Then see that what you thought was one meaning was another this whole time.

Everything else in the world, what you have heard, been told, seen, or learned will no longer matter. The conversation will begin between you and the Lord.

I know that sounds crazy. I understand. You cannot deny your calling once it happens. Believe me, you will know then.

No, and I am u certain on doctrine. Catholicism is in some parts of my family. I have a lot of Protestant roots as well. To be frank, I really just want to find any place that isn't draping itself in rainbow flags and giving lessons on pandering while the world is going insane. I've thought about Catholicism just to get away from this. Even if I don't go I am really excited to learn more about these traditions and their meaning.
