From the previous thread.
I have a flair pro 2 which has the metal screen.
I have a new bag of dark roast and after pouring in the water into the chamber it dislodges the screen causing it to brew (fucking awfully) in the chamber itself.
I've tried 18g & 16g and going slightly courser as I was wondering if it were too fine (might still be the case)

I usually use either my Commandante or my roommate's Niche to grind.

Routine
>Grind 18g (admittedly I am not the best at finding the sweet spot for espresso grinds)
>Use the distributer, then tamp, place the screen on the grinds (I started experimenting w/ adding a wetted aeropress filter inbetween the grinds and the metal screen, to a fairly nice affect)
>Water immediately off boil, fill the cup with the grinds for about 10 seconds,
>10 second pre-infusion
>pull as solid of a stream I can without rupturing/channeling the puck to 36g

I never do the 2 rounds of boiling cycle, but I'm interested. Do you just do a coffee-less pull, essentially? Ultimately I think most of my problems probably come from the grind

Try pulling 45g of water through in the same time. You're fucking yourself by sticking to a static ratio. Tweak everything you can. Grind, ratio, time, longer preinfusion whatever, just do it with as hot of a machine as you can.

I'm not doing any fancy coffee, just using my parenrs' keurig (I hate these things but it's all I have right now)

These things. Electric grinders are basically a body, a motor, and a set of burrs. You want a motor with enough torque to grind lighter beans without stalling and dying and a well aligned, precise set of burrs.
http://www.espressotool.com/?idx=3
Pic related, but on the hand grinder side. If the burrs are shit, the grinder is likely going to be shit and a pain to use. If you're not going to be grinding massive amounts, or doing super light roast espresso this is getting talked about alot.

gut and replace all parts with slightly newer "better" more expensive espresso parts.
all for the shitty beans cost co. roasted 2 months ago. they are fine.

Sorry for newfagging but I've been doing some research and I still haven't gotten to a conclusion.
Please recommend the best espresso machine under about 300, OR under 500 if there is a significant increase in quality.
I don't care for milk, just straight espresso shots, so doesn't matter if the frother isn't great. Also, not looking for second-hand.

What's your location, US, UK, AUS?

And what's your current situation regarding espresso? You get them at the coffee shop or you're mostly a drip enjoyer? I see so many people jumping head first into espresso without even liking it because it's regarded as the pinacle of coffee...

If you want an electric machine worth a fuck around/under $300 you have you be willing to consider secondhand. If you're completely against it and don't care about spending the extra you can just buy the gaggia machine new and it's still relatively cheap, just not as cheap as if you take advantage of someone getting rid of theirs.

Keep in mind that one of the most important qualities in a good espresso machine is that it's built to last, which is why the secondhand market is so active in the first place. It's like buying a car, if you can get a brand new car or you can get the same exact model pre-owned for significantly cheaper in roughly the same condition, most people are likely to go for the cheaper option, because if you're concerned that the used one won't work right you're probably not very confident in the quality of the new version to begin with.

For reference I just looked and was able to find a used rancilio Silvia on eBay listed for about $300 at the moment and those go for over $700 new. Granted it's got some superficial wear, but if you're looking in the $300 range you're going to be doing some modding/maintenance anyway if you actually care about the end result even on a new machine.

Breville makes perfectly capable machines for their price points, the issue with them is repairability and overall build quality kinda sucks. They use tons of plastic and build in ways that don't encourage use repairs, so you end up reliant on them to service when issues arise and they work on the mentality of replace, don't repair so you're usually stuck sending in your whole machine for repair if something's wrong even if it's something other manufacturers would allow you to just replace a part on. Basically they're designed for the "it just werkz" crowd who never want to mess with the inside of their machine and are perfectly happy doing warranty replacements every few years if something goes wrong.
