17480499 No.17480499 [Reply] [Original]

A while back I asked in one of the whiskey threads for a scotch that could give me a bit of that peaty taste I love from stuff like Laphroaig but on a shoestring college student budget and someone recommended Teacher's Highland Cream. I bought a bottle while in my home state and have ran it dry (loved it) now that I'm back in school and it is not stocked in any Liquor store in the state of Ohio. (The state runs liquor distribution and they do not send it anywhere)
Are there any other cheap scotch's / blended scotch's that can give me a similar flavour? If I can't find a suitable replacement I think I will actually shrivel up and die

I don't think there are any good cheap scotches like teachers. You could try the smoky famous groose or JW black. But teacher's is cheaper than both these.

Teacher's is absolutely abhorrent
If you want something in that price range, altho not scotch, just go for Tullamore/Jameson/Bushmills, way better.

I mean, theres stuff like Ballentines., J&B, Grant's Johnny Walker Red, 100 Piper, etc, but those are as shit as Teacher's imo.
Famous Grouse and Dewar's are decent actually, if you really wanna go for a cheap scotch

thats rough dude, try to save and then get a case of handles next time you're home. should be $25ish a piece without case discount.

in the mean time try J&B. first couple pours will probably suck, but it gets a little more noticeable peat after a week or two of being open. It takes added peat well, so you could stretch a good bottle with a handle of J&B.

Johnnie Walker Black doesn't have the same caliber of peat linger that Teachers does so dont waste your time there. the Double Black is a known meme as well. Maybe try the Red Label as it's cheaper(same as J&B) and younger so the peat flavors should be fresher and hang around longer. Good luck.

it's really young and heavy peat. the sherry in it is more for smoothing over some edges before bottling. even their flagship "big sherry" bottling Uigeadail is also quite young and the sherry is still too subtle imo. it's really just a little extra sweetness on top, a gloss over really.

You picked out one of the hardest things to drink on a budget, the only thing worse would be cognac/brandy(my favorite). Anything that needs to be aged is going to be a bit pricey. I only know of cheap bourbon when it comes to cheap whiskey. I don't think I'd ever drink a "budget" scotch, because if I'm drinking scoth the price is the last thing I look at. If you are looking for cheap alcohol that actually tastes good Vodka is the drink for you. Trying to find good, cheap scotch seems to me like an idiots task. You could go for something like Famous Grouse. It's a blend with some Highland Park in it, which gives a mild peat flavor. Black Grouse has even more.
Your best case scenario would probably be to find the McClelland's line of Scotches. It's a line of budget scotch single malt whiskies from each of the regions. The McClelland's Islay is a 3 year old Bowmore, so you're going to get a bigger peat note than with almost any budget blends. It's honestly really good value for the price.
Adelphi also makes a wonderfully priced cheap blend that is fantastic, but it's unlikely to be available where you are.

Malt-forward, fruit, honey, overall a very gentle, though not at all bad whisky. It gets a fair bit of hate because it's one of the larger distillers, but that doesn't make it bad.
If he likes it, get him Glen Garioch 12, if he doesnt, try Benromach 10.

Fantastic Whisky... for a specific type of person. I personally love it, but Laphroaig is a very (very) smoky whisky, and that flavor can be aggressive and overwhelming for many people. Approach with caution.

Blended Scotch and Blended Irish whiskies would be subsets of Blended whiskey in general, right?

I've seen some blended American whiskies, but I think blended Scotches outnumber them or blended Irish whiskies.

Or did you mean Irish whiskies in general, not blended Irish whiskies?

If so, I vote for blended whiskies next.

18 takes a little while to come out of its shell, but is really nice with a cigar. 12 is also good for the price and the main difference between the two is 12 is more fruity and peated and the 18 is more subtle and woody. can't go wrong with either, but if you've got any other quality spirit around do a comparison between the 18 and whatever else to help separate the characteristics.

when you get them, for sure try the 18 first because once you start sipping Laphroaig it'll be the last thing you taste for a good couple of hours.
