OP didn’t even specify the allocation of the $100.
Is it purely earmarked for a grinder, as his pic might imply?
Or is it saying any coffee implement over $100 is overkill?
Or does he mean it in a more broadly philosophical sense? Like ALL things over $100 are overkill? Every item I own which cost >$100 is just an overpriced meme that I fell for? Is my only option for redemption just giving away my possessions and home, and living naked in a cave?

Fuck you, OP. I wanted a coffee grinder; it’s too early in the day for an existential crisis, and I’m gonna go grab coffee from 7-11 so I don’t have to think about it.

Hey /ctg/, headed to 7-11. Anyone need anything?

I fucking hate the direction /ctg/ is headed. This place was fun and had great inspiration for coffee, just as little as 3 months ago. What happened? The /ctg/ comments are sarcastic at best and cancer at worst. Any efforts at actual discussion immediately just turn into shitposting and memeing, generally pulled off by only 2-3 dedicated schizoid trolls. Genuine questions for help are met with shill comments “Just buy this thing like I have because it’s all I could afford, then you’ll have better coffee like mine” etc. Are there mods that come into this thread? I find it hard to believe this thread is only run by 3-5 people that constantly shit up the place and for no good reason other than “le epic lulz”. Is there any way to request that off topic retarded comments and trolls could be banned or just deleted?

The mere fact that you think that there exists the "Reddit VS based/pol" epistemic dichotomy should alarm you to the fact that you are a mentally ill retard - you are so fucking ignorant and retarded that you don't even have a concept of what understanding would mean.

Your entire world-view is informed by tweet-sized posts on 4chan and .jpg infographics, that is literally all you know yet everyone who disagrees with you is the "brainwashed ZOGbot". It's incredible, stuff of ancient comedies really.

Holy shit that word has lost all meaning on this board because people like you who think it applies to any sort of recommendation of any product other than whatever you personally think is the ideal “correct” one.
>“Just buy this thing like I have because it’s all I could afford, then you’ll have better coffee like mine”
Whether a purchase decision was based on low-budget constraint or not, I’d rather hear something based on actual experience/use/ownership of whatever. Because otherwise, I’m not hearing an actual opinion, I’m hearing someone regurgitate someone else’s opinion/review and doing a worse job of it.

I should get a standalone lighting setup or something. I can get good focus but the lighting is consistently an issue and the cup height obscuring the portafilter can make it hard to get any worthwhile video. Posting the shots here helped me identify channeling and other problems with my extraction. Apparently needle thickness matters so I'm dropping from .35mm to a mix of .22 and .25mm.
>One way you can set this tool up is to use 0.22mm and 0.25mm needles together. This way you have stiffer needles to more effectively stir and rake the coffee grounds while the thinner needles continue to fluff. This small diameter difference may seem insignificant but 0.25mm is actually 70% stiffer than 0.22mm!

You haven't seen anything yet. Yeah you tamp the bed of coffee into a lightly compacted puck. The needle stirrer just makes sure there's no clumping for water to fight around. NOW they've got a fucking porcupine jig that punctures the coffee bed before tamping to give controlled channels to make sure the water flows evenly. Real esoteric shit. I've just used a sewing needle shoved into a cork for a few years so I decided ~$25 of 3d printed plastic and acupuncture nails wasn't too bad to hop on the tard train. The new new hot shit is to prewet your espresso puck with a spritz of water. Pre-preinfusion.

I got a pretty nice grinder for Christmas. Much better results and ease of use than my previous one with way more consistent grain size, so my press coffee is a lot smoother now. Had to experiment to get it just right though, very watery brew from my press if I set it too coarse.

One weird thing is that I prefer pre-ground coffee with a splash of milk but freshly ground I only drink it black.

interesting link, thanks
>(a) carry heat into the center of the coffee and promote even development, (b) inhibit the rate of browning reactions initially, pushing them later into the roast allowing the coffee to be roasted more evenly without developing “roasty” character and also without flavors associated with “underdevelopment,” and (c) change the mixture of reactions that occur based on presence of water.
I dont agree with all he says but it's worth a try i guess.

(c) I disagree with because the water rehydrating probably isn't reacting chemically with the bean, and a few extra % moisture being lost as steam is probably negligible.

(b) sounds odd to me as well because I learnt to start with high heat and to start dropping the heat after first crack, ie to get the beans dried out as fast as possible to avoid the baked taste. It's interesting that he notes that rehydration allows putting more energy in at the beginning due to the bean being protected by moisture, but if you are putting more energy in just to create steam does it really change the speed in which the bean is heated?

>pic is how I roast beans still. I have tried many methods but nothing beats the simplicity of a covered pan over a (preferably gas) stove.

There's definitely a bit of a wobble but its not too bad. People have taken off the base and bolted it straight into counters which might mitigate it a bit. I'm still pulling great shots with it though. I'm going to jigsaw out a little riser at some point to get bigger cups underneath it and probably slip some of this under the base.

Flairbro here. Don't listen to the dipshits, you're still going to want to preheat the robot on everything but the darkest roasted beans. You're trading slight inconvenience for flow profiling on the cheap. I used a scratch and dent signature for years before the 58. I'd cycle boiling water in a yeti mug to preheat my shit but this is the new tech.

No, they're all great with different workflows and downsides. 9bar has the best build quality but you're limited to a fixed recipe essentially. The only variable you can play with is heat. Flair and robot you have to deal with a somewhat annoying preheat, but you get absolute control over the pressure and flow. The robot has weird super tall baskets which limit certain "accessories" like tampers and distribution tools but some people like it. The cheap flairs have way more tools available now compared to when I had one of them so you might want to check that out. Prep is super important.

>> No.17479993

>>17479872
As of right now I'm one of those people who want good quality coffee without having to worry about variables, and also I'd be making espresso only for myself, so a 9barista would be ideal I think. If it consistently makes the same great coffee, then that's good enough for me.
I guess the question really is whether a flair or a robot are capable of making significantly better coffee, which I'm guessing is probably not the case.

What do the IKEA coffee beans taste like?

Which screen? Old silicon gasketed or the newer all steel one that sits on top of the basket? I had to buy this separately when I had a signature and it made a noticeable difference. Silicone one would get pressed down into the puck while the new one rests on the basket lip.

Its probably not 18/8 so who knows how long it will last/what its excreting into your water. Could turn out fine, could turn you into a mongrel. Could rust immediately, could last your entire lifetime etc.

The new steel one.
I have a new bag of dark roast and after pouring in the water into the chamber it dislodges the screen causing it to brew (fucking awfully) without applying pressure.
I've tried 18g & 16g and going courser as I was wondering if it were too fine (might still be the case)

On same boards it's customary to make the next thread on page 9-11.
For example on /an/ a thread that just reached bump limit will still be on the catalog for days, 310 isn't the time to make the new one and if you do almost everyone will ignore that thread.
