Hey boys, i recently found out i have a genetic disorder that prevents my body from breaking down "bad cholesterol". My cholesterol values are a bit over the normal limit because of this and my doctor said i would not have to take medicine if I changed my diet to include more fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackarel and less beef and fatty chicken like the thighs. No pork obviously. Unfurtunately im a student and pretty poor. I live near the sea so i can get herring and mackarel cheap, but fresh tuna and salmon are incredibly expensive.

Should I turn to more canned tuna and salmon or should i try to improvise using herring and mackarel? Do you know any good stir fry recepies with mackarel or something you could do with fresh herring?

Go with the herring and mackerel. Sardines too, and canned salmon is totally fine.
Canned tuna is okay occasionally but shouldn’t be made into a near-daily staple due to mercury levels. When you do get it, go for light tuna instead of albacore (which had roughly 3x the merc level of light).

Is there evidence that high cholesterol is necessarily an indicator of impending atherosclerosis? We know that fat people tend to have high cholesterol and fat people are more likely to have arterial plaque but how do we know cholesterol causes plaque? There are a lot of unstudied factors.

Additionally, most studies about whether artificial LDL reduction improves health outcomes are done in men who are already high risk, e.g. obese and smokers. I don't see it as necessarily conclusive that high LDL in a thin, fit person with a genetic mutation is necessarily dangerous.
