Smear the butter in the tub or wherever you have it until it's soft before applying it to bread. Effectively mix the butter onto itself and it'll become soft.

It's the same thing you'd do if you need to whip butter and eggs or whatever else and you forgot to leave the butter out, just work it until it's soft and or whipped.

I personally just knife out a chunk and smear it into the side of the container for a bit until it's really soft.
