Your topic would be better if fast food places didn't also have expensive burgers too. Burger King and Carl's Jr both have burgers that hover around $10. Carl's even had a truffle burger that was pretty pricey (but it was really good ngl). If anything, I'd say sit down restaurants average out to about the same as a fast food meal (unless you're getting a couple McDoubles and fries at McDonalds. The fact that all size drinks are a single buckeroo is a perk too. Then you can get a full meal for under $6.

I think that it comes down to variety, quality, ambience and ocassion. Depending on where you go, you can get different meat, toppings, sauces, buns and side dishes. Some places offer much better quality than what you can get in a chain restaurant, they actually care if it's correctly prepared. Some places are comfortable and cozy enough, so that you can enjoy your food and conversation with others for a good time, unlike some chain restaurants. Lastly, I feel like inviting someone to a good burger or fast food restaurant doesn't feel as lackluster as inviting them to a chain restaurant. I clarify, this is only my opinion.

I genuinely don't get it. If I go to a fast food chain like McDonalds, A&W, Burger King, etc., I get the burger fast and it has that "fast food burger" taste to it. If I go to a burger restaurant, I have to wait then pay out the ass for a burger and fries that tastes exactly the same as something I could just make myself at home.

i'm quite sure people put lettuce in burgers because it prevents all the juices from the meat from getting to the bottom bun and making it all soggy

I'm an adult and want to sit down and have my food served to me and be on actual plates and with actual silverware. I'm not poor and I enjoy taking the time to have a good meal. Nothing is more soulful than sitting at the counter of a decades old family run diner, chatting and watching the other customers come and go as you savor a well cooked burger, fries and coke.
