17415096 No.17415096 [Reply] [Original]

Is it worth the effort to make at home? I never tried it, I have the ingredients, but it it worth the proccess or should I just buy the ones they sell on the store in jars?

Does it taste good?

>> No.17415133

it's fermented cabbage with hot sauce. buy some sauerkraut and throw some siracha on it. wala kimchi

>> No.17415139

>>17415096
The process is easier than it's made out to be and can be very rewarding. It does taste good, and can be customized to your taste. Whereas if you buy kimchi in a jar and rate it 8/10, you'll probably buy it again and continue liking it. But if you make yourself and it's an 8/10, you can change something for the next batch and improve, asymptotically approaching your Platonic ideal kimchi.

*forgot to mention it's seriously probiotic. I give myself a homemade sauerkraut juice enema every once in a while, when my gut begins to get sloppy. Kim chi might be a bit spicy for that though.

>> No.17415153

What is kimichi like? I don't like cooked cabbage, so not sure how I'd feel about this even though it's not cooked.

it's fun and it ferments for a short time compared to other stuff, getting some ingredients may be too much of a hassle and knowing what to use the leftovers for may be difficult but I think that if you have the time you should try it, I used maangchi's recipe and recommend it

>> No.17415159

>>17415096

If you're in the states and buy grocery store kimchi you lose its health benefits because of those damn FDA glow niggers and their pasteurization regulations. The benefit of homemade ferments beyond just the customization and flavor is the probiotics that haven't been nuked by FDA kikes

there's no benefit to eating kimchi. south korea has the highest rates of stomach cancer in the world because they always eat this garbage

They're also the hardest drinkers on earth, but yeah I'm sure the fermented cabbage is the problem

>> No.17415188

It's totally worth it. It's not as complex as it might feel. It takes a couple hours but most of the time is waiting for the cabbage to soften. For me homemade kimchi changed the way I use it. Before I'd only use it as a side, while when having access to huge amounts of homemade I'm often also using it for cooking. There's a lot of really good dishes based on kimchi: Kimchijeon (kimchi pancake), biji-jjiigae (kimchi and chickpea soup), kimchi fried rice, to name a couple.

What I enjoy most about it is eating some after very short fermentation (~1day). Its very delicious, like a spicy cabbage salad although it can be just as tasty for warm dishes.

There's no way in hell that's accurate. South Koreans are indeed amongst the heaviest drinkers on the planet, second maybe only to some eastern European countries.

Also the stomach cancers are also because every other dish they have is deep fried, or super fatty such as pork belly that they love, etc...

It's just being looked at the wrong way. Sure it's half way down the list, but it's still fairly high. Especially when you compare it to some other countries it's above. There's also the fact some of the ones above it are only a decimal or two higher. Everyone I've known from Denmark was a regular beer drinker, and it's only .2 above South Korea. Ten liters of alcohol is still plenty of alcohol.

if you live anywhere remotely near asia, then no.
you can buy 1kg buckets of the stuff for $2 or $3 worth.

if you live in the West, depends.
if you eat the shit constantly then yes.
if it's an occasional or one-off thing then just suck it up and pay $10 for the small jar in the hippie/organic section.
