Russian here. I envy you americans for the variety of food the late stage capitalism broght you. All those fast food chains, pre-made everything waiting for you at the convenience of your nearest wallmart, chinese takeout, authentic mexican food and all the culinary benefits of that melting pot you have going on there, 20 flavors of every popular junk food item at least. No wonder you're all so fat, i would probably be too. But everything you get for granted i have to either make myself from the ingridients i can get, import or just wonder about. My latest project was a ginger beer, which turned out to be easy and delicious (thank you Weismann), currently on my third Moskow mule writing this.
My biggest success was pizza so far (i know it's not "american" but it's essential junk food, you know what i mean) I probably made around 300 at this point, i get compliments and can't eat any of the chains pizza now because mine is superior and cheaper)
Also the applie pies were really great, pic related. I prefer them with lemon zest and juice, a little sour.
The pumpkin pie was a disaster, it came out soggy because i didn't pre-bake the crust
Sorry i took so much of your time, you didn't have to read all this. Since you reached the end of the post can you suggest some products that worth importing, or may be some typiclally american dish. I have interest in hot sauces.
p.s. mtn dew high voltage was great

I was thinking about pizza stone but i get pretty good results with just regular oven tray, I bake pizza crust for 3 minutes exactly so it would just stop being a pile of dough, then i get it out, sauce it up and put all the toppings, then another 4 minutes in the oven and it's done. My oven door doesn't close tight, i had to adapt and this is the best course of action

Ur good bro, uh yeah hot sauce is liek number one thing you should learn how to make or import, might be hard getting the peppers or spices to make, but you can try importing, and learning about all the different types of southern hot sauces is cool. You should try clam chowder or something more north eastern american too liek new England maine food, that and southern food, California pretty much has jack shit on either of those. If you look up Jeremiah tower you can find some of his recipes if you are intrested in west coast food. But yeah get your hot sauce game up.

No, we mostly just have kidney beans and some white ones, they are not very popular here. There is a Georgian (country) dish where you saute it for like 40 minutes, add roasted carrots and onion, some garlic and that's it. Beans are also in one of the popular soups. Thanks for the recipe, i will try it out! Not sure where to get lard though, it's not in stores as a separate product.

>>17413699
Sure. It's just expensive, so people don't do it often. Subjectively speaking only around 15% of Ebay sellers ship to Russia. I import Levi jeans because they're cheap in US, but is somehow expensive in yurop (what the fuck, how, they're made in third world countries). For traditional Borsch you make a beet sour culture from scratch, it takes 3 days to ferment and get sour. You can buy the stuff premade in a bottle too if you have a polish grocery by you.
Nowadays it's just fresh beets boiled with potatoes and maybe carrot and cabbage in chicken stock, and made sour with vinegar. The beet sour tastes much better but isn't necessary. Meat is optional but really good in it, typically some sort of sausage or beef.

Yeah, you can do other meats but I prefer ground beef. If it's 7% fat sometimes I won't drain it, but I made a foul batch with some 10% recently and I know it's because I scorched the grease and I just don't feel like chancing it anymore. You can always leave just a little in when you drain it.

There are three relevant families of peppers. Annuum, Baccatum and Chinense. Jalapenos are an example of annuum and habaneros are an example of chinense. Baccatum are a little more out there, maybe the sweet peppadew is the most common, but also amarillo peppers are pretty well known.

Annuum typically take about 90 days minimum in the ground with decent sun to be fully productive. So you need overnight temperatures over 12C and 12 hours of sunlight for about that length of time AFTER planting out. Chinense are more like 120 days. Baccatum are somewhere in the middle, but varieties vary, some annuum want 70-110 days, some chinense 90-150 days, some baccatum 90-130.

If you can provide that where you live no problem, but some varieties are more or less suitable. I grow a huge variety here in the UK and I start peppers indoors in late january with grow lights and I have a greenhouse outside. I harvest approx 120lb a year.

What kind of jars do you reccomend for ginger beer? My husband has been trying to make it recently but he hasn't had success with the mason jars we have because I guess they leak too much air. I enjoyed your post, Russia anon, and I’m becoming like you now myself in burgerland. Once you get something dialed in to your own tastes, it’s hard to go back.

One thing I would highly recommend is ordering crazy plant varietals via seeds. One day I had this epiphany where I truly realized “well fuck if you want Taiwanese guava stop being a bitch and order the fucking seeds”. So now after two months in a windowsill I have 3 tiny maybe 5cm little guava trees. We’ll see how that goes. They look happy.

I also grew some really strange Basil (Holy Basil), and some large green and red cherry peppers (blurry picrel) along with some Aleppo chiles (but those turned out largely not useful in cooking). Right now trying to get a kumquat tree growing from seed.

I think if you give up your expectations on time, and even usability, the journey itself is rewarding when something unexpectedly becomes great. Also, you start to think longer term and plan better. An old man who likes to grow things told me “if you can’t grow plants, how can you hope to grow relationships with people?” and I have to admit he was right.

Turkish pizza's dough does not rise as much, so closer to thin crust. Toppings vary a lot and there is no tomato sauce

People often mean lahmacun when they say "turkish pizza". It is very thin pizza which changes texture quite a lot. Its topping is basically a paste made of meat, onions, red pepper and tomato. You often wrap it with fresh stuff (onion, coriander, tomayo, lettuce and squeze some lemon etc) before eating

Pide is also called turkish pizza and closer to a regular pizza. Toppings and shape vary a lot this time, often includes lots of cheese but cheeseless pide is a thing as well. It ia more buttery. It is thicker than lahmacun and has softer dough, even softer compared to pizza. The shape is often long oval but doesnt have to be and it can be closed/calzone like as well

have you made Syrniki? I tried making it, but it was too loose and I couldn't form it into patties. I drained the cheese in a collander overnight but it apparently wasn't enough

>Here is a side dish to try out, i usually make it with a baked chicken

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups dried black-eyed peas (note: there will be peas leftover to serve as a side)
8 cups water, divided
3 teaspoons salt
1 small ham hock (or 1/4 lb. hog jowl)
5 slices of thick cut bacon (or hog jowl)
1 large onion, chopped
2 cups long-grain white rice, uncooked
1 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
I
NSTRUCTIONS
Over medium heat, place the dried black-eyed peas, 6 cups of water, salt and ham hock.
Cook covered over medium heat until tender, about 2-2 1/2 hours.
While the peas are cooking, fry the bacon until crisp. Remove bacon, crumble and set aside, reserving the bacon grease.
Sauté chopped onion in the bacon grease until softened.
Separately, in a large sauce pan, with a tight-fitting lid, add the rice, 2 cups of the the pea liquid, 2 cups of water, 2 cups of the cooked black-eyed peas, sautéed onions, bacon grease, crumbled bacon and red pepper flakes. Cook covered over medium-low heat until rice is done, about 15-20 minutes. If needed add more pea liquid if rice gets too dry.

I'm an expat whose been living in Russia for the past few years and the culinary experience has been nothing short of miserable. The vast majority of pizza being sold here is offensive to civil society yet you can't really trust reviews since Russians genuinely don't know any better. I thought there would at least be decent Chinese/Vietnamese food given the immigrants that settle here to open up a restaurant, but they clearly aren't bringing their best and the food is usually gas station tier. The Georgians are the only consistently decent demographic that produce good food here, even the Uzbeks generally have superior dishes to "traditional" russian restaurants.
