I can't say Florida is some hidden gem. I did enjoy all sorts of south American (as in the continent) food when taking day trips to Miami, back when I lived in Broward county. Nothing I'd tell people to visit Florida for, but authentic and tasty stuff.

There's no natural reason to live in south Florida, it's a tropical hellhole. But because people live here, people from out of state are offered jobs here, and they move here too.
No one my own age (mid-twenties) in Florida likes living there: they're only there because their parents are there and they can't afford to move out of state. I only got to move out in September, and it's been the best thing in my life.

There's two distinct cities I would call "Orlando" - "Party Orlando" and "Orlando Orlando". Party Orlando is where the theme parks are. Orlando Proper is... I don't even know how to describe it. There's no culture. There's nothing distinguishing about it. There's no sense of place. There really isn't even a downtown to speak of. It's just... urban sprawl. Endless urban sprawl for a 40 mile radius. You can drive 10 miles in any direction and it will look and feel like you haven't driven an inch. It's a city without a soul. 251 square miles of uninterrupted burgerpunk. I fucking hate it here. I just want to move back to Sarasota.

There are some really good art museums there I've enjoyed going to and absolutely would go to again, and, supposedly, some reasonably good gay bars.
But yes, I won't claim Orlando is something great. I don't know any great city in Florida.

I've been looking into the northeast myself, but even that is a mild culture shock. Maybe I'm just not use to everyone not being an out for themself shithead and actually being polite. To me it struck me as weirdly autistic. I guess this state has totally ruined me.

By the way, try out your buses, Tri-Rail, and Metrorail. They're not great but once I finally caved in and tried (got over my 'tism of perfectionism) I found it was much, much better than nothing, and quite liberating.

There's a lot of things you could complain about but it's generally great here, this has to be one of the best places in Florida. Crabshacks every 5 minutes and it's extremely white in St Pete
