Yes, with spirits especially.

You get harsher distillates in different parts of the process. Also, aging really smooths out whiskey. Better whiskey comes from better, more careful distillation (which requires more attention, i.e. labor), comes from the tastier parts of the distillation (center hearts), more EtOH less MeOH, less acetaldehyde, etc.

Kirkland reviews:

Premium Bourbon: made by Jim Beam, allegedly. High ABV. Tingly and spicy. Smooth enough to drink neat.
Canadian Whiskey: GARBAGE. Very harsh and has an off flavor. Definitely NOT Crown Royal
Tennessee Whiskey: literally Jack Daniels. No difference just like $5 cheaper per handle
American Vodka: Damn good. Flavorless and smooth, I used to shoot it chilled. Made from corn.
French Vodka: Allegedly Grey Goose but produced in a similar way by a nearby distiller I heard. Made from wheat. Anyways I can’t tell the difference between their American and their French.
Spiced Rum: Mixes really well with Coca-Cola. Makes great rum mixes. Not really a sipper, kinda harsh unless mixed.
Irish Whiskey: was good immediately after opening but after sitting a weak took on a really bitter flavor that was not good at all
Irish Cream: I can’t tell the difference from Bailey’s
12 Year Blended Scotch: really really really good. A $40 handle of scotch has no business being this great. I don’t like scotch or peated whiskeys so it was a shocked I liked this so much.
Silver Tequila: perfectly serviceable party tequila. People shoot it. Better than Cuervo Especial by far and better than other cheap tequilas. Not a great one though.
Añejo Tequila: been awhile but I remember it being OK
Margarita: Really good for the price. Not a great margarita but a good one and simple - pour on ice. I preferred when it came in glass bottles but idk if the taste is really different.
Cognac XO: I think I’m just not a Cognac person. Very smooth and all but I disliked the flavor.
Bottled in Bond Bourbon: really good, sad it was a limited run.
London Gin: drinkable by itself surprisingly. Made really good mixed gin drinks. I was pleased with it

No, because the steel is an impermeable barrier. A charred oak barrel will pull harsh organic compounds out of the whiskey and they’ll go into the charcoal. Basically it’s a long term filtration process.

tried this at a tasting. Unreal spice and candied orange notes.

I normally drink Laphroiag but man this was some stuff.

That sounds a little intense. I haven’t had anything nearly as bad but recently I was out drinking with friends in what seemed like not a particularly excessive amount but somehow ended up blacking out and forgetting half the night, including winding up at my friend’s house puking in his toilet. I woke up the next morning sideways in my bed with no recollection of how I got there. Left me incredibly spooked and I haven’t drank again since.

what's with everyone online shitting on suntory toki? I think it's great. Is it too subtle? Do people like whisky that tastes really strongly of something?

It's popular, so it's bad. Simple as. When it was relatively unknown in the US every post about it was saying how good it is, which is accurate.

Back in the early 2000s, don't remember what year but it matters because it was a single yearly release, I had an Angel's Envy that was finished in a port cask. It came in a light red wooden box and it was mind-blowingly good. I've also had a Lock, Stock, and Barrel rye that was excellent.

Pic related. Highland scotch aged in white oak bourbon barrels. I like bourbon and don't much care for scotch and this was the best of both. RIP Ealanta
