To me the best German beers are Zwickel style. (Keller-, Land-, Zwicke-, Zoiglbier) They're unfiltered, have a better body and are highly sessionable. Big macro brews have started to offer these types of beers in bottles but not all of them are really good. Pic rel is my favorite though.

The reinheitsgebot is still maintained and kept to.
It's basically a beer version of Whiskey naming.
Beers brewed in Germany cannot be called Beer if they contain anything other than water, malted barley, hops and yeast for bottom fermented beer.

These days it's just a labelling standard like Whiskey is where you can't call a whiskey Scotch if it's not from Scotland, single means one distillery and blend from multiple etc.

G*rms drink weak cheap beer. German rejects who immigrated to America is probably how we got such a taste for lagers, aka alcoholic water. Belgian stuff is worlds better, even their basic ales. Heck even the English make better beer and their cuisine is the worst.

If you try to get into German beers then I'd suggest you to try different beer styles from old breweries. Try to see what's available at your local import shop and research when the brewery was founded and what style they're known for. I think it's always best to get to know different beer styles by trying the og recipe first. Sometimes, new takes on old beer styles might taste completly different. I wouldn't want you to have the wrong impression.

Germans drink beers that are actually not painful to drink a lot of. The "high flavor" ones are shit and after you drink 6 or so, it starts to get annoying.

Not a meme. Paulaner, Erdinger and Franziskaner are just the top 3 weißbier brands in Germany and available everywhere. That's why people drink them. They aren't bad but also pretty boring (just as many if not most brands in that style). You probably won't get any of the more interesting ones abroad as you can't even get them in most parts of Germany too.
Weihenstephaner on the other hand is a total meme. People here praise it while it's just a mediocre weißbier in Germany itself and not even close as popular as they make it seem. They just seem to have a good marketing team and got early into exporting their stuff.
