I've tried and thrown away dozens of different sauces. sweet baby rays is truly a top tier sauce. every now and again I'll find a bottle worth buying again, but I'd be willing to say the majority of the bbq sauces your local store carries are absolute shit.

Well, I almost always make my owns sauces if at all possible. Dunno what you like, but this is one is a standard of mine. You can really change the taste of it depending what kind of alcohol goes into it. I don't have measurements, sorry.
>chop white onion and garlic, sweat in pot with butter til translucent
>when the above goodness has sweated down a bit, add alcohol (I've used whiskey, scotch, rye, vodka, red and white wines, champagne, even peach schnapps)
>when alcohol has simmered off, add
>splash of vinegar of your choice (mine is a mix of rice wine and white vinegars)
>brown sugar, honey or molasses
>ketchup (use a fair amount, this is the base)
>smoked paprika
>garlic powder
>onion powder
>cayenne
>red chili flakes
>sometimes a touch of liquid smoke, depends on the food the sauce is going on
>let simmer til it starts to thicken a bit
>slam that shit into a blender, or use an immersion blender, buzz that shit til it's smooth as fuck
>return to pot, cook on low simmer for another fifteen, twenty minutes
There you go. I'm sure it's not the best sauce on the planet, but it's versatile, and I've literally never had a single complaint on it.

>let your grill burn down until you have nice even coals
>put chicken on skin side down, leave lid off until skin is done perfectly
>flip over and put the lid on with all the vents open
>cook until done through
moist, fully cooked chiclen with a nice smoky flavor, sauce isnt overly sweet since it gets cut with vinegar. if you have a gas grill, start it off very hot and turn down when you flip chicken.

the best, i really don't know.the stuff that famous daves sells is really tasty as far as what you can just buy.

making your own is really good, and easy, its most apple cider vinegar and ketchup, recipes will have you add some worchestershire sauce and cayenne, brown sugar, and then after that you can kinda do what you want.

it sounds fucking nuts, and it took a minute for my brain to kick in in and start understanding what i was tasting and that i enjoyed it, but ive tried a mint BBQ sauce on some ribs. very qeird experience, but not at all bad.

This is good as a base, but I say cut by half with good chicken stock, and simmer for 30 min with an onion cut in half and de-papered (which is subsequently discarded). Optionally add a bit of fresh thyme diced as small as you can. Unfortunately this was the most popular sauce on July 4th last year. I guess one hazard here is make sure to use a rubber spatula and scrape the bottom, also have a whisk, chicken broth and gloopy bottled sauce need substantial encouragement to combine into a new light, sweet, savory sauce that’s basically good on everything.

I came here to post Stubb's. First time I had it I didn't really like it, like you said it is kinda ketchup-y but second time I really developed a taste for it. Really nice tomato tang with molasses and just a tiny bit of kick. It's good shit and I went through my bottle in less than 3 months while I've still got a bottle of sweet baby rays that's been in the pantry for close to a year. I also like SBR but just found myself really enjoying the Stubb's.

Exactly! That's how I felt. I don't use it a lot, but when I do I find its really nice. Great on various meats. I like it when I don't want something really sweet (I usually prefer sweeter sauces) and have it compliment whatever I'm eating, instead of changing it in some way.
I've only had their original flavor so I can't speak for the rest. Great ketchup replacement.

Simple bbq recipe for chicken and pork, not so much beef. Slice up 2 tomatoes and toss them in a blender,. Blend the tomatoes until they are a liquid. Add a quartered onion, 5-6 cloves of garlic, a quarter cup of molasses, a table spoon liquid smoke, 2 table spoons of Worcestershire, a teaspoon of horseradish.(either sauce or that jarred blended kind) 1 tablespoon of salt, 2 teaspoons of pepper, a dash or two of paprika, a shotglass of vinegar and one or two fire roasted bell peppers. You can also add a quarter cup of ketchup but it's not required. Blend all that stuff up until its liquid. Transfer liquid to a small pot and bring to a boil, then let simmer for about an hour or until it thickens. Stir often. Salt and or add molasses to taste if you want more sweetness or savory. I've also added chili pepper to this recipe before to make it hotter. You could probably sub in sriracha but be aware it also sweetens. This sauce is really good on chicken and ribs.
