I'd like to think that soon, very soon, people will stop eating at these kinds of places and make their own food. Maybe, just maybe, people will realize how much cheaper it is.

Depends on your economic status. Poor people have more time than money. The rich have more money than time.
How much is your time worth? Do the math. For most people, making their own food is always going to be cheaper. Same with mowing their own lawn, or eating out their own wife. Outsourcing is often times more expensive and usually involves a lesser end result.

Cutting off my sentence doesn't make me wrong. The issue you're attempting to bring up is more about intelligence than anything else. Poor people tend to be less intelligent. So they often work long hours for little pay. That isn't a universal. The reality is most poor people could be doing much better if they weren't so stupid. So when they come home from their 11 hour work day and are too tired to cook and too poor to afford fast food it becomes a rock and hard place situation.

Rich people have more time, which makes it more valuable to them. They then spend more money for people to do things for them (delivery, repairs, services, etc), so they can have more time so they can make more money. It's a feedback loop. Hint: unless YOU are creating something you are otherwise doing NOTHING or CONSOOMING. People vastly over-estimate the value of their activities and having more time to melt your brain playing vidya, mindlessly browsing the internet, or binge watching shit on netflix does not make your time precious or valuable. Investing in a skill like cooking is always worth more and carries more mental health benefits too.

>effort

People get better at things they do more often. The best cooks and chefs weren't born the way they were.

You sound like a working class chump. I bet you thought it would be a great "investment", how you would wake up to a warm, healthy breakfast to start off your long day. Maybe, you even had a couple thoughts about all the other nifty little uses you could find for the thing, how it would help you cook healthier meals in general, shed a couple pounds off the old gut, boost your confidence around work and with the ladies. Yeah, maybe that slow cooker would start your life cooking again, wouldn't it? I can see your strained hands holding the box and reading through it carefully at the store. A little bit pricey, but you're the type of guy who thinks everything is more than you can spend, aren't you. And look what happened to you. Look what the slow cooker did to you. Fucked you over, and made you clean it like a useless bitch. You don't even fucking like oatmeal. Piece of shit, you've been repeating those three words your whole life, haven't you. Yeah, how was work after that piece of shit fucked you over? I bet it was on your mind the whole day, you probably didn't say shit to nobody. Can't be telling people about your mistakes. How your little fix yourself plan, failed you. Don't want people to start thinking you're the failure. You're the piece of shit, all along. You don't want that do you? You don't want to be the piece of shit everybody secretly whispers about, do you? Was your father a piece of shit like you? I bet he never had a slow cooker. He had a woman, a house, a damn good job. I bet it's slow cooking you the fuck alive, isn't it. Comparing yourself to him. incoming tl;dr
The biggest factor I think is what >>17269114 alludes to: being in a situation where due to a combination of your personal choices based on your current situation, you're going to find wildly different opportunities to find a balance between money and time, and different capabilities to exploit them. I live in a rural town apartment complex that is particularly cheap, and most of my neighbors seem to make around or below the 30k income per capita for the county except for my neighbor who works at the longwall mine, and makes about 10k more at the cost of it being a short-term gig with long, understaffed days in a dusty tunnel under the ground, and a single mom traveling nurse who makes around 20-30k less for miserable hours and commute away from family. Neither are fools, just good neighbors working with what they know and can get at the moment.

Meanwhile my folks both couldn't and wouldn't want to pitch in for even trade school and told me it well off, and Pell and other grants would still be debt I was a adverse to getting before a job to cover it, so from like 15 I pursued projects and certs based on asking anons a few times and reading up on non-uni paths to nailing a starting job remote (pre-2020). Two better jobs later and I work 3 days a week on an average of maybe two to four hour workdays, and the only real consequence is being on the clock for 12 hours. I have been offered promotions to other teams (nearly got forced twice) and more much higher-paying positions before from former coworkers, but I stick with the lesser salary along with low-risk investments because it's a great work-life balance and I can live in my hometown well. But that's the exception, and good fortune at that.

So while I make basically every meal at home, I'm not going to judge the dozens of pizza boxes and fast food bags in the garbage cans much at all unless I'm willing to offer making a meal for them instead.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Just buy some kind of roast, season it properly, and throw it in the over for an hour or two while you do other things. You don't have to spend more than half an hour prepping food unless you want to make something more complicated.

Alternatively, you could cook in bulk over the weekend and eat that food for most of the work week.

If you are ultra high net worth then yes. But you still have a kitchen and cookware.

For most successful people entertaining is a common trait.

High net worth people have exceptionally beautiful kitchens, dining, and patio. And fully stocked pantries. They live next to grocery stores that are provisioned with brands most have never heard of. They do not typically hire home staff like a chef.

Employees require training and labor costs before they get anywhere close to profitablility. In slow times, the employee stands around and makes the company no money, whereas the online system is always up, and always ready to function immediately. It's also more accurate. Typing in your pizza order to Domino's.com is more likely to get out accurate orders than Baheem on the phone struggling through the language barrier to accidentally put cream cheese on your pizza instead of three cheese, leading to food cost increases, and labor loss when the product needs to be re-made and re-delivered.

Oh, gotcha. For a company like Domino's, there's probably a lot of relevant statistical models showing them that by offering wings (likely considered a premium product) only in-app, they're saving a certain margin in labor cost. I don't think Giuseppe's local pizza place is getting much out of it, but a large savings in labor is going to be a win for bigger companies that want to avoid the cost related to hiring and training, much less time wasted scheduling or paying for benefits.

I used to work in corporate for a top Vegas casino company, and the statistical models broke out that if we charged people for parking, we'd make more profit than continuing free parking for locals to come eat, play, and drink. It turned out to be true.

What happens when the market adapts and the same people who would be calling in are now just ordering onling from their local store. Seems short sighted.

Unless you are going to be using that time to do something economically more productive than the cost of buying prepared food, it will always be cheaper to prepare your own food.

Very few people are that insanely busy. You have to be a serious workaholic for it not to be cheaper - I mean a work from you get up to when you go to bed kind of person. They do exist but most normal people like to do things non-income earning activities like spending time with their families (or leisure activities).

If you are wealthy and you make a lot of money and you’re very busy but not always busy, it is not cheaper. But it may be worth it. If you are an attorney at a big law firm making $300k a year but working in the office from 8-6 every day and answering emails at home until midnight and working Saturdays etc., you may decide your non-working hours are too precious to spend saving a little money preparing your own food and cleaning up after yourself.

In that situation it’s not cheaper but it definitely makes sense to eat out a lot.

But for the vast majority of people they have enough free time that it will be much cheaper than paying for someone else to prepare you food and take care of cleanup etc.

>For a company like Domino's, there's probably a lot of relevant statistical models showing them that by offering wings (likely considered a premium product) only in-app, they're saving a certain margin in labor cost.
I really hate this type of thinking and I think it’s worsened a lot of American corporations. Yes there is important stuff to be learned from careful analysis, but at least with restaurants, they really need to put more into thinking about “how do I provide clients a good dining experience they will want to pay for” rather than “how do I squeeze as much money out of this business.” A business that focuses on the former is going to produce lots of orofit if it does the job well - Chick-Fil-A, In-N-Out, Nusr Et come to mind.

Domino’s fell victim to the greedy thinking and their sauce, toppings, and crust departments all made minor cost saving changes that resulted in their pizza quality crashing hard. But they have had a comeback story where they focused on improving the quality of their food and the dining experience and they’ve had a real resurgence.

It’s a bit of a long-term versus short-term thinking. If your goal is just to maximize next quarter profits rather than build and maintain a high-quality brand that will bring in continuous profits your decisions will be different. And I really hate how so many corporations fall prey to the trap.
