I used to work a retail place.
I’d lock the entrance 30min before closing. Exit door was automatic and only opened from a sensor on the inside.
People would come, door wouldn’t open, they’d look at the sign, then look at their watch, then look at the sign again, and then literally start knocking on the door.

Restaurant: clean the grill, filter the fryer, change the fryer depending on the day, flip your line, clean your line, wrap everything and put it away, clean the oven, pull everything back from the wall, clean the wall, polish the wall, sweep and mop behind the wall, push everything back against the wall, clean the spider top, clean the hood vents depending on the day, sweep everything, sweep beneath everything, deck scrub and a finish mop. Went into a Chipotle about 30-minutes prior to their closing with my then-girlfriend back in 2019. We've been visiting her mother in the hospital and just wanted to get some food before going home to crash. The teenagers behind the counter constantly gave us mean looks and rude remarks. I finally lost it when the cashier girl said to another coworker; "Why the fuck are these assholes ordering food now?"
I told them that they could all go fuck themselves as they have no clue what we were doing before coming in before we walked out. We went to a sit-down place that was next door for a better meal.

it's so fucked what happened. The Taco Bell my parent's house used to be open til 4am, at least on weekends. Then when covid started they reduced their hours to closing at 2am. Now...they close at fucking 8pm. Luckily there's some late night ones around town, but it's insane how much they have scaled back. I fear that the 24 hour or late-night culture over the past few decades is coming to a close.

Even in small towns across the country there were wal-marts and shit open 24/7, not anymore. It's a weird fucking world now

At my work, we start mopping, scraping, and cleaning all the dishes/walls/bathrooms about an hour before closing. If you don’t start early, you’ll never get out before 1 am.
There is a lot to close down. I do agree that grills shouldn’t be turned off when there’s still 45min to close, but sometimes we have people come in literally 2 minutes before our closing time, sit in the drive through, and blare the horn if we don’t come to the window.
Most of the employees at my joint are highschool students who come to work directly from school. It doesn’t feel right for them to have to get home past midnight every shift.
