In Finland we have compulsory "household skills" class for years 7 - 9 in elementary school and at least when I was a kid we got a very well put together book that had a ton of simple and more advanced recipes as well as instructions on everything you might expect to need instructions on in everyday household stuff such as basic cleaning, laundry, maintenance of appliances... that freaking book was awesome. Mine is still at my parents' place and the recipes are good.
