I got a chaozhou teapot, a kitty cat teacup, and a few dancong and puerh from Bitterleaf. Also of note is a sample of actual yellow tea. Still not sure if that vendor is cringe or based so I was apprehensive about ordering from them, but I know this teapot's going to be right.

not sure why you would think a hot flower water would be as strong as coffee but i'll take the bait. most sleeping aides stronger than chamolile are most common as pills and legally restricted. lots of herbs can be infused in a tea like drink and if you have the money to try out can be good sleep aides past just getting you to sleep. if you're not worrying about getting dependent benadryl or zolpidem are best for occasional use but if you do enough in the day (exercise, work, cardio) i wouldn't expect being awake enough at night to need something heavy to knock you out

You have to accept that some leaves will break and not worry about it. You can use a tool, you can use a butter knife or a screwdriver.
Don't try to separate every leaf, just try and get the cake into manageable pieces for brewing.
If the cake is really heavily compressed the leaves probably weren't in one piece when it was press anyway so just break it into smaller chunks that will open fully when brewing

no problem. for oolong i'd recommend four seasons or jin xuan or any advertised/rated with complex flavor, texture, and mouth feel as well as interesting tasting notes. for cheap options i like more toasted, nutty, and creamy/buttery flavors as well as that full tasting vegetal taste more greener oolongs are known for. if you like milk tea thai tea mix is very cheap and tastes good hot or iced. hojicha is great for afternoon/evening (low caffeine). woodsy, toasted flavor and watery texture with smooth and full mouth feel that chamomile and other low caffeine options lack. distinct hard to describe floral taste. for black teas i recommend russian caravan (smoky scent with chocolate/stone fruit base and campfire overtones). greens are best fresh so it's hard to find quality tea on a budget, japanese greens are definitely my favorite and sometimes you can find a good deal on a few month to a year or so old teas. i don't like ripe teas or have much experience with dark teas outside of cheap raw puerhs from amazon but if you have the patience/ good sources for sampling a cake or brick of high quality tea will last a long time

true there are lots of weak and low quality "milk" oolongs on the market artificially flavored but i've had some really good jin xuan teas that have complex vegetal 'base' flavors and buttery and creamy feeling making a great reliable everyday drinking tea. in contrast it's quite difficult to find a competitively priced tieguanyin that has what i would consider the standard for a high grade tea of the varietal (tangy aftertaste, full springy mouth feel close to fruit/green almost mineral texture), making it a rare tea to find for someone on a budget without money to invest in sampling different teas. although i agree in theory that tieguanyin is better it's not underrated or a better deal if you're just getting into tea

great. it's the sort of signature product at my favorite tea shop (blue people from vital t leaf in chinatown seattle), they're always giving out samples of it and it's usually on sale. product is like honey without being very sweet or one-note tasting and nutty ish notes that are hard to describe. slightly vegetal or very mildly fruity, overall quite hard to paint a picture of without trying. the best part is the mouthfeel and aftertaste, an almost citrusy spring feeling that leaves the mouth leaving the drinker wanting more. very well balanced and is both as calm and providing and suited for social experiences as it is beneficial (as it's advertised) for yang energy for general use, meditating, day to day work, etc. other ginseng products do not provide nearly the same energizing effect, complex taste or overall enjoyable experience as this unique oolong

Yes, I've been doing it to hold the main portions after breaking, but also another purpose: saving the small bits. Working on storing the smaller portions of tea based on general category (white, shou, etc) and seeing what kind of flavors and aromas I can get out of these bits that may go unused otherwise. I'm especially interested in seeing how my white and shou portions turn out, though it will be months until I find it ready for this. On another note, I am looking forward to testing and sharing my first stage results of the coffee aroma experiment with the thread in a little under two weeks from now.

This sounds like a fun opportunity, though the tea:

So, I don't know if it will be any good, or to your liking otherwise. I plan to let it rest in different phases, perhaps up to six months.

I'm also considering using some common-grade pu'er or even a white (probably shou mei) on the side to see how different teas may take to the aroma influence. Not sure if I should add it into the tub today or just wait, but it could be interesting.

You mean for roasting your beans manually at home? What a mad lad, the aroma must be quite nice. I will post about the infusion results of this first wave somewhere around 11-12 days from now, and another either 30 or 60 days from then. I'd prefer to only send good result tea, so we'll have to see what comes of it. I remember my cheap tieguanyin that was stored near coffee (by accident) was pretty smooth and milky, so it will be interesting to see what happens when a more direct, intentional aroma interaction takes place over a shorter period. Been sipping on it last night, left it over night with just enough water to cover the leaves over night, then topped it off this morning with boiled water. Its pretty good. The first few cups were a little too rich and one note, but later ones had that nice spicy, smokey, wood flavor. I think I. Going to do the first few infusions in my pitcher and strain out the leaves before I add them to my mug to help with the one note flavor. Might go and break up the whole toucha cake and make this my winter sipper. I've watched a few videos on how to break up cakes, but any advice on how to do it with those hard compressed cakes would be nice.

My tips specifically for a dense factory ripe
Don't try to separate every leaf. Small chunks are fine. If you get too big of a chunk you can usually split it in half along the seam of the tea leaves
Don't worry about breaking leaves. The leaves in those toucha are usually chopped anyway at some pint in processing so don't stress about getting perfect whole leaves.
The videos you see of tea vendors brewing with their perfect full size leaves is either from very loose cakes or they broke up an whole bunch of a cake and picked the prettiest bits to show you.
I usually place the toucha bowl side down on a flat surface and then push straight down with my pick about an inch from the edge, then pry outwards, you can do this all the way around and that part of the tea is the loosest and most easy to separate.
The middle part is the most dense, you can sometimes scrape a layer of the outer surface off but after that just break it into chunks because it wont separate easily.

yo just got to try out the tgy. best i've had for the price so far. first steep 1.5min tastes like classic guanyin mineral flavor with calm subtle notes of banana, maybe slight butter pecan and little to no overpowering perfumey or filler taste i've found in teas from more popular sites. light honey sweetness. maybe some melony fruit as well. hopefully later tastes bring out texture and more flavor, i'll update as i go on

I just had a small disc of 2015 Turtledove from w2t, by FAR the best thing they sent me. I expected the shulloween package to be a pile of mediocre shou for not that much money, and it was, but this is delicious. Is all white tea like this and I've simply had mediocre ones in the past? If you'd asked me, I would have told you I didn't like white tea before now. Very sweet but it doesn't have that gross cloying overly fragrant smell/taste I assosciate with floral/fragrant white teas. I wish I had more to give more accurate tasting notes, but I doubt I'm familiar enough with white tea to give anything more specific anyway.

already tried and reviewed the TGY. just finished a cup of amber oolong which is a decent bit lower in quality but nice for daily drinking unless you're used to high quality oolong. tastes like any oolong you might get in a chinese restaurant; not great in terms of quality but good for inexperienced tea drinkers after long steepings. i'll post a review of the other two soon

not sure on grandpa style with oolongs, i tried it with white and green tea but i doubt you have a problem logistically (too cold, leaves won't unfurl, etc) it's just that the flavor of oolongs are heavily dependent on mouth feel and aftertaste so it might lack in flavor or punch expected from TGY tea

anyway back from testing each of the mountain teas products listed previously and i'm getting used to the range of quality and generalized oolong taste experience. jin xuan tastes creamy and has classic variety flavor, but altogether lacks in high quality tea and buttery feeling. amber is as stated decent as a strong brewed beverage without unique qualities. gui fei tastes nutty, smooth, and has a welcoming texture. overall other than amber oolong each oolong at least comes with a strong flavor selling point. although they might have higher end products in from high altitudes. in general i'd say gui fee is excellent restaurant quality oolong and i'd say the same for any others on their website, especially TGY (which is less a compliment to a dinner meal as it is a drink for social gathering). kinda high right now so idk what's i've been drawing but overall seems like the shop should bring in more TGY, alishan, and dong ding options in favor of selling everyday green, roasted, or afternoon teas, high elevation teas, and maybe something like the hairy crabs would help

Yes and no. Less than $20 of porcelain and glass Chinese teaware and a kettle (ideally temperature-adjustable electric) are worth the investment. That said, I don't care for boiling tea with water in a single vessel without a specific tea/goal in mind. 99.95% of brews done that way will be terribly bitter and lacking in clarity of flavor and aroma. I like using a temperature-controllable Mr. Coffee water kettle with a porcelain gaiwan, glass gong dao bei, and porcelain cups. Very inexpensive, easiest maintenance around, easy to do whenever, and lovely infusions. Western pots can be fine, but they prioritize boiling the shit out of your leaf, and covering up the harshness with milk and sugar. I don't agree with that approach, but the teaware itself can often be fine.

It has a good smell, like fresh wet greens. Barn hay kind of smell comes through. It kind of reminds me of cucumber and other vegetables. I'd buy it again. it was only about USD $0.11 a gram as well.

thanks for the recommendations, this cake looks promising. if the pictures are accurate it seems to have some wetter storage on it. cheap non dry stored semi-aged sheng from stores with cheap shipping is much harder to find than the dry stored stuff (i like both but variety is nice). i don't care much for iron cakes though.

Ye sheng is weird. I had one cake of it i really liked fron YS that was overwhelmingly bbq smokey, now sold out. But generally it's a weird tea, the tase reminds me heavily of the smell of citronella candles.
Anyway it's probably a bit more than you want to spend but i would consider this one.
