Spicier, a little peatier, less complex.
Talisker has adopted the Coalgate approach, and I'm not sure it's a good idea. Within $10 I can buy storm, skye, 10, distillers edition, GoT, and you're pushing it but dark storm (volume adjusted) and port ruighe.

Admittedly I have therefore bought at least 6 bottles. But long term most of those are in the "never buy again" category just because I know which are best.

On the plus side though, they may be gaming retailers such that on of their products is always on sale, reducing their cut. Not that I buy off sale.

So that means stick with your Laphroaig idea, but also check out Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman and Lagavulin. Ardnahoe? I've never seen an Ardnahoe.

>>17216083
IMO chase value first. When it comes to cask strength releases avoid Bruichladdich Octomore (but Port Charlotte isn't too bad) and go for independent Caol Ila (Smokehead High Voltage is cheapest), Any Kilchoman CS release, Ardbeg Uigeadail (getting expensive).

There's also some non-islay peated CS releases that undercut the above from Talisker, Old Ballantruan, Benriach, Benromach, Connemara.

David Nicholson is the cheap whiskey I really like, I just started drinking it and it punches well above its price range. I keep domestic piss water around for this reason. When you're doing yard work and shit, and water just isn't cutting it, I'll throw down a Miller lite.
However a better grade beer and wine goes great with food, only time I really drink it. After work, want to unwind, I prefer a whiskey bourbon, or scotch. I haven't been drunk in years, I drink a couple of drinks, and stop. Binge drinking, blackout drunks in my younger years have taught me this.

Yes, with the most expensive whisky sales being twice that of the most expensive wine sales. But you need to keep in mind wine should be 3-4 times cheaper based upon how much less alcohol it contains, and a whisky of that age (60) will almost certainly be drinkable, and a wine of that age is usually trash and may make you sick.

You got to taste macallan from back when it was the undisputed best scotch distillery, before edrington bought it and turned it to shit. almost 2 weeks since touching either the Springbank or Kilkerran. Whatever sherry they used on the 15 reminds me quite a lot of my Tyrconnell 10 Madeira finish. It has this waxy, cotton candy thing along with a hefty black pepper note that is reminiscent of a platter of surf and turf. 8/10 on both the nose and palate, so far the price/availability is the only negative.

the Kilkerran is deceptively sippable at the strength presented. the peat is understated on the nose and is on par with the Victoriana in terms of sweetness except being closer to custard than cheesecake/cheese tart/strawberry and cheese danish. 8/10 on both fronts as well.

both just really make me want to get a case of the 51.5 Victoriana as my special occasion pour.

Did you do your homework and actually drink those? They vary from sherry bomb, to rerereused sherry casks, to not sherried at all but has fruity notes.

Of those I'd say ignore Aberlour. Aberlour has some good whisky, but the sherry casks are not so good.
Arran has some other great cask finishes. Throw in port as well.
Balvenie is good, Bunnahabhain is good but peated whiskies don't tend to be sherry forward.
I'd put Glenallachie, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich, Glengoyne, Glenlivet (except Nadurra), Glenmorangie (except Quinta Ruben and Lassanta) and Glen Scotia into the suspected to contain sherry category, and immediately write them off as not sherry bombs.
I'd recommend lower end sherry Tomatins, like the Bourbon and Sherry 8.
And not recommend Glendronach at all, as you see more fruitiness in some of the above finished whiskies.

Look out for independent bottlings. It will push up the price, but you can find a cask strength sherry matured bottling from almost any distillery.

using mouthwash once a day will both help and hurt your identification of methanol and phenols in spirits. if thats no good, then getting used to drinking Bushmills white label, red bush/black bush or Jameson as the older the whisk(e)y, the more subdued the alcoholic notes *SHOULD* be.

getting your brain and palate acclimated to alcohol is your goal. drinking younger stuff is typically going to have more alcohol presence, especially something with a high neutral grain spirit content and volume focused distillerys/brands(Brown Foreman, Heaven Hill, Johnnie Walker).

Victoriana doesn't claim sherry use.
But to be fair a lot of those do have a sherry finish on a portion of the whisky before vatting like the Glenmorangie 18.

>Glendronach having no fruit
Not what I said. Some of the sherry finished whiskies have excellent casks. Lassanta/Qunita Ruben, Arran Port/Sherry, Tomatin 8, are all more sherry forward than the Glendronachs.

Honestly you can’t really know. They definitely won’t tell you. You can judge a whisky by it’s color if it’s not e150 of course. You can tell first fill sherry from the color for the most part. You’ll see a darker ruby color in the whisky.
