I bought a ton of those chili cheese dogs from the vending machine at the boys & girls club I would go to sometimes after school. I was a latchkey kid and sometimes I'd decide to go hang out there for a while before going home and I'd get those chili cheese dogs and then play snes and pingpong or dodgeball with whatever kids were there. I want to see if a vending-machine only store, like in Japan, could work in a small town in the US. Find some place in the midwest that's known for not locking their doors at night, and see if people would give it business.

When I was in Japan I bought a cabbage from a vending machine - but it turned out to be an adorable Oddish pokemon. I took her back to hotel and named her Kyoko and decided to keep her.

Some farmers have their own machines, mostly in front of their own farms. Those are the best, but hard to find. Even suburbs that are just a couple of km out of Ljubljana's city centre get pretty rural. For example I used to live 9 km out of city centre and there were just fields all around our house.

commercial rent is very high in Japan and land prices even higher.
Japanese companies also tend to hire on a long term basis, even a job flipping burgers is expected to be an entry into a full career eventually.
It's not a smart business decision to open up a new shop selling apple sweets and water bottles, not the least of which because your main competition will be multi-national giants like 7-Eleven.

Compare and contrast America where land is cheap and teenagers are disposable.

We used to have an unmanned produce stand nearby on one of the back roads by the local native reservation. The owner, a native himself, was an old guy whose sons all worked on farms out in the valley. It used to be the first place you'd be able to get fresh corn every year. The cashbox wasn't even nailed down or anything, either. Only ever got stolen once when I was a kid, and apparently the guy did it on a dare and felt bad enough to return it.
Then the demographics started to change... The city nearby started to get flooded with asiatics as Chinese immigration increased. Before you call me racist, I'd like to point out that these faggots were caught in the act multiple times before the stand eventually shut down. They'd show up in a minivan and have their kids empty all the food from the stand because "ah so, flee food!", and then they'd fucking nick the cashbox too. The owner once waited around and gave them shit for it when he caught them, pointing out the signs and the prices. They just pretended to not know a word of English and still ran off with all the stolen food. He called the cops and they basically just told him it was a shame but they couldn't really do a thing about it.

Poor guy eventually just tore the thing down. He's was up there in years and really wasn't able to sit around all day on the roadside watching out for the asiatics roving around in search of the "free food stall". I sometimes drive along that back road to avoid the traffic, and fuck if it isn't depressing seeing that empty corner. We just aren't allowed to have nice things anymore.

That's the fucking kicker: the local tribe here was the most stereotypical group of blindly-trusting native americans. Nicest people in the world, you could tell they were the kind of people whose ancestors would have gotten swindled in a deal involving shiny beads and still forgiven the guy the next day. They were totally okay with having white people around, and every year they'd host huge barbecues and everyone in the city would get the flyer in the mail for it.
All it took was some five years of unrestricted immigration and boom. A giant security fence went up around the reserve along with gates and big signs saying "private property, no trespassing, first nations members only". Over two centuries of living alongside white people didn't change who they were, but five years living alongside the Chinese and suddenly the most trusting people in the world now live in a gated community.
