The point of the third bun section is so that it can have more sauce without compromising the integrity of the sandwich. If they just squirted sauce in between the patties, it would gush out. This is another point where the two burgers aren't comparable. The Big Mac is designed to be about the entire sandwich, while the Whopper instead focuses on the patty and there's no real standard toppings.

The grand mac

I prefer the basic lettuce/tomato/onion/pickle basic bitch cheese burger, something Maccas doesn't really offer so I prefer the Whopper.

But all the Burger Kangs around me close too early or their mobile ordering doesn't work so I usually go to McDicks for a BOGO Quarter Pounder and use the BOGO savings for adding lettuce and tomato.
