not that person, but I like Bulleit and Four Roses, both small batch. There is a noticeable differences between standard and small batch, I'd say try both but if you're importing you might as well go for the higher quality. Four Roses has more of a sweetness to it, Bulleit is more balanced. Maker's Mark is decent, a bit of sweetness, but I'll get it if I'm not sure what I want.
Wild Turkey 101 sounds almost gimmicky at 50.5% alcohol, but it's shockingly good for it's alcohol content; a lot of depth to the flavor.
Buffalo Trace is, imo, the gold "standard" good bourbon and I keep a bottle on hand at all times (and I rarely drink).
From that shelf:
Definitely Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace for certain. Those are universally loved. You should eventually try Knob Creek, Elijah Craig, Blantons *eventually* (it's a bit of a meme whiskey, its good but you mostly pay for the brand). Then figure out which you like and why and branch out from those flavor profiles into similar/other.
But honestly Eagle Rare/Buffalo Trace always draws my attention.

Makers Mark is a really good starter whiskey, because it's very mild, sweet and has a strong vanilla flavour. Even my gf liked it and she has an aversion to whisky. Especially scotch though.
Also those prices are fucked up. Can you import stuff from Germany? You'd get everything for at least 10€ less per bottle.

Maker's Mark is good but rather expensive for its mid-range quality. Try some Evan Williams black label, it's cheaper but I think it's just as good.
Another one to look for is High West's Prairie Bourbon. High West makes several good whiskeys but the Prairie Bourbon is the cheapest one they sell and it's still very good. They're also the only booze manufacturer from Utah that I'm aware of.

If you can find it, Blanton's or Basil Hayden. Top shelf bourbons without spending over $100. Youd really be treating yourself, theyre both incredible (esp. Blanton). For whatever reason, you almost cant go wrong with any whiskey that starts with a "B".

Also I think Makers Mark is the best on the market for the cost. Cheap enough to mix, good enough to drink straight. And for Blantons, each bottle has a unique top on it that spell out the name. Lined up, they show a race horse running. People will actually buy full sets

Knob is fine, but if you're going to spend the money I'd advise spending a bit more for the single barrel. Four Roses you should get at least the small batch. Jim Beam is a good mellow bourbon, great for lemonade drinks in the summer or with some peach schnapps. Cheap, but decent, like your Maker's.

But I cannot stress enough, absolutely do not buy Eagle Rare or Buffalo Trace. Any anons here pushing them have not tried enough bourbon to know just how awful those are, but want to sound more sophisticated than they are. I promise you.

As vaguely as you'd like to take it really. I've only ever had what's on my supermarket shelves but do enjoy it. I feel like I need to try a pot vs column, different regions, agricole, etc

So far I haven't seen a taster set that really provides a good intro, just 5 variety of one brand or specific niche.

Until recently I didn't particularly like Whisky. Last Christmas I was gifted an Arbelour 12 which I really enjoyed and read into whiskies some more, only to discover there are varieties I like. As I've always enjoyed even the cheap rums, I'm excited to do the same here.

First of all it's much harder to get into rum than whisky as rum is a relatively new popular style of aged spirits in the old world. The community is smaller and it's harder to get some facts for the actual products. The lack of regulations in all the regions also makes it difficult to get into it. Also the regulations in the countries they're sold in. The USA has almost no rules at all while the EU got pretty specific.
British is definitely the easiest style especially, because some countries like Jamaica are not allowed to adulterate their rums. The most important being those can't add sugar, which is a huge issue with many producers of especially Spanish style rums and spiced rums. The latter could never be labeled pure rum in the EU anyways but the Spanish rums often had 40-50g sugar/l making them basically liqueurs.
But back to British style: Often very strong, robust and even sharp flavour. Best known for dark and aged varieties. The vast majority is aged in ex-bourbon casks as those are cheap. The age statement is the same as for whisky. Pretty much only molasses based. Distilling is mostly done with column an coffey stills but also pot stills to get very esther heavy rums that are often mixed with cheaper first ones to add tons of flavour. Another important part of the flavour is the usage of dunder in Jamaican rums. The mixing o different distlilling techniques also makes it harder to get pure rums from just one specific type. It's much easier to find those in America than Europe in my experience. Especially in your price range.
Spanish style rums are similar to British but much milder. They are also molasses based spirits mostly distilled from column stills thar are also aged in ex-bourbon casks. Although Spanish style rums are also widely known for un- or shortly aged (still some 3 years like Havan Club) rums often used for mixing. Ageing here can be extremely different from the traditional methods as some use the solera system.

>> No.17149351

>>17149306
Hit the letter limit. Look up the solera system and be carefull if bottles say a number but not actual years. The biggest problem with spanish style rums is the addition of sugar also called dosage. This can range from 5-80g/l. It can also be done with other styles of rum but no region is as notorious known as the Spanish, which often adds 40g/l in also highly priced stuff. The reason is that sugar masks the alcohol and makes the spirit more pleasant. So keep that in mind. You'd probably like every swill if you'd add so much sugar to it. Check sites like this for more informations http://rumproject.com/rumforum/viewtopic.php?t=1683&sid=fe72c7a5ebf5ae8cbac77e4e0e47c967
Then there's French style rums. Biggest difference is the usage of fresh cane sugar (juice) instead of molasses in their agcricultural rums. They are also just dilstilled in column stills. This results in a completely different tasting spirit. have you ever had cachaca? That's how it tastes. Very fresh, grassy and fruity flavours in young spirits while those get lost with ageing similar to brandies. The ageing uses the stupid French system so no numbers as statements but word codings. I'm also not exactly sure about sugaring. Most are dry but some have a very small sugar content. I suggets you to buy French rums as miniatures, because the prices are kinda high and you may not like them. Or buy some cachaca.
In general it's hard to suggest something when you don't know the prices and availabilities of rums. Appleton 12 is always a good start for an aged pure rum. See if you like the ageing character before you buy into more expensive specific rums.

My boss surprised me with this. Never heard of it. I was shocked because I expected it to taste as smokey as a campfire, and as hot as one too because it's 116 proof. To my surprise it was smooth and not overly smoked, I really like it.

The only Bourbons that are really worthy are high proof bourbons, at least 100 proof, or 50% alcohol or higher.

Look for Evan Williams bonded 100 proof (white label), or Wild Turkey 101 at the minimum. From what I can see in your pic, The Knob Creek is the only 100 proof bourbon. I'd get that. If what's in your pic is the entire selection at that store, search around for other stores.

Where do you live? Rum market in America is pretty damn inexpensive. $40 can get you almost anything including some top shelf offerings. I'd recommend Papa Pilar ($35) if you want something damn tasty. Their dark rum is excellent but if you want something more unique their blonde is incredible and tastes of melons and vanilla. If you're looking for a larger distiller for more variety in taste and price then I'd go with Plantation. Their entire line is excellent, especially their cheaper offerings.

I'm trying to decide between Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10, which one should I go for? I want smoke in my veins, something like the Bowmore 12 which was bliss for me, but I cannot find it anymore. I've tried some other peaty whiskies (Lagavulin 16 and Talisker 10) but they didn't please my need for pure smoke. current runs of both are little one dimensional for me. Ardbeg 10 tastes dense, but not so complex, but also doesnt hold up to water all that well(still does decently). allegedly the Corryvrecken is essentially the 10 at Cask Strength. Laphroaig 10 has a common negative from most reviews as being too low in proof at 40% UK/43% NA(even though the distillery suggests diluting your dram with 2 or 3 parts water to 1 part whisky at that proof), but also has the Cask Strength version of the 10(supposedly better quality casks used too boot). although Laphroaig doesnt have half the meatiness Ardbeg does, it can provide more nuance with occasional fruit and spice notes.
tl;dr Ardbeg is like eating a piece of mint-chocolate wrapped in bacon covered in fresh driveway tar and Laphroaig is like eating a shrimp tail that fell into the ashy coals of a campsite grill. hope this helps!

both spirits are intrinsically sweet, but in different contexts. Kentucky Straight Bourbon is mostly sweet at its core due to corn, wheat and barley and then on top of that the heavy vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, toffee, chocolate etc. gained from a heavily toasted/charred fresh oak barrel give you the impression of desserts or breakfast pastries.

Single Malt Scotch again being 100% malted barley and matured in a multitude of casks containing bourbon and wine and rum are sweet on sweet combos that can give off totally unique flavor profiles a contemporary palate has not likely to have experienced before similar to flavored vodka or liqueurs without the adulteration of the alcohol itself.

that's why scotchfags seem so anal to nonscotchies because there should remain an inherent quality of the product that the big companies constantly seek to remove at the cost of profit margins. bourbon is less ridiculed because a) it's hard to make a bourbon so bad that normies will notice/care and b)its America product for Americans, dont think just drink.

saying bourbons are generally sweeter than scotch is a little unfair to bourbon as they are only just now starting to play around with finishes and other things inside the regulations that will either be updated soon or a subgenre will be created to prolong out this boom.

I mean unless you get new craft distilleries beta test bottle that's 99.9% bitter oak tannin they all have the same range of flavors but simply in a different combination. And sure, to a degree that still can happen inside the Scotch market but you have to be really unlucky or stuck with supermarket selection to experience it often.

Maker's is a family favorite for me. Almost all of the whiskeys are good, just different from one another. Some are super filtered which makes them "smooth" but takes away a lot of the goodness that seasoned whiskey drinkers come to love. Maker's Mark 46 is something special, or the regular barrel proof if you can find it is one of my personal favorites, except I don't recommend anything barrel proof to a newbie

OP should try some kinda Jack Daniel's. The standard old no. 7 does have a taste to it that many will describe as paint thinner or glue. But it's one of my favorites anyways, if only for nostalgia, and probably the best selling whiskey. If you get the more expensive varieties, then you won't get that chemical taste. It kinda grew on me though and I guzzle the stuff like no other. From the pic you posted Blanton's and Eagle Rare are probably the best. Not sure what that is directly to the left of Blanton's so if it were me that's what I'd probably reach for

Buffalo Trace is pretty standard stuff, no "better" than what you've already had. It's well-regarded because of its price point, and because of the reputation/marketing of the distillery

A local farmer raises corn exclusively for four roses. He has to go thru a lot of shit but the price is worth it. From there it gets hauled in by a friend of mine, contracted out by MGP. He doesn't drink and I would always get his Christmas bottle. The master distiller would always set a small batch out for employees around the holidays. Bottle was always unmarked, always in the straight bourbon bottle, and always good. I think his son in law gets it now, the fucker.

I always have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 laying around the house. Just stocked up on good beer and a bunch of canned cocktails too, both from the same local brewery/distillery. They really do make a great gin, never was that much of a fan until they started making it. Got a few of my friends a bottle each of some local apple brandy for Christmas. Going back to the liquor store in a few days just to buy a few other things for Christmas like a bote or two of Veuve Clicquot, some good brandy or yak and some beer for one of my friends because he doesn't drink that much liquor and I'll get some for myself just because I'll be there.

yeah, my Christmas gift to myself was gonna be a Glendronach 18. bottling date 6/16/2021, still 46%, un-chill filtered, "natural cask imparted color" but its not moving off the shelf. before it would be gone before it made it to the shelves, but its $200ish after tax and thats just too much. it would be a pariah and i would hate myself everytime I poured it. I noticed also that its only Olorosso now and not PX and Olorosso. wish I could find a minature so I could rid myself of the itch. instead I'm getting a handful of good bottles that I can savor and enjoy instead. I have a Glenallachie 15(as I've heard its like a Speyside version of the Glendro 18)on standby I might be picking up Monday if something else doesnt catch my eye first. For now though pic related will do, might even pour some for a family member for the expected reaction despite all my advice.
