Well all you fucking alcoholics managed to meme me into whisky and after spending about $500 in the last year I've decided that all they taste like is wood generally with dry tannins on the finish on the older and more expensive ones. The cheapest blended scotch is arguably better in my opinion because it isn't like sucking on an oak chip on the finish. Up front you've generally got varying amounts of sweetness, vanilla and maybe caramel. Like now I'm being objectively reductionist about the experience I'm bored stupid by whisky.

We take the same cheapest genetically modified barley available as everybody else and subject it to ... (delete as appropriate) our high tech modern facility/our small batch artisanal facility. We then age it for a period of time leaving it (delete as appropriate) harsh as balls (distinctive) or smooth (complex). We then finish in characterful casks for added interest (product diversification across a range) and are also known for no smoke/smoke/lots of smoke.

Honestly all the craft/character malts are just about tasting of something and it is usually smoke or wood. The middle of road cheap ass blended shit at least is well made and actually balanced.

Anyway. That is ignoring the rye, bourbon and other whiskey. Also the supermarket own brand single malts and the supermarket blends.

Like I said. Overall wood with or without smoke. Some are stronger and come across as harsh without a little water. Some are kind of weak anyway at 40% or less. Some are very sweet, generally most of them I find to be sweet. Sweetness, vanilla, caramel etc, but these are all things that you get from barrel ageing anyway.

I think I fail to see where the 'magic' is in whisky. It is basically malt distillate aged in a waste product from the bourbon industry. Sometimes they make the effort to find distinctive barrels and do something more interesting. The rest of it is like ... blah blah our craft our history our heritage.

Find me a producer using different types of malt producing a distinctive spirit and then doing loads of weird stuff with interesting barrels and processes?

I get that you are just trying to be a cunt, but honestly ... how many other spirits attempt the same level of pretension of whisky? I understand that you've got to somehow imbue your product with a story and thus give it value, but like I said maybe I just don't get the magic of whisky. Maybe I don't like it that much? I'm fine with that ... like I said I've mainly been memed into it by posts here. I just see it as stripped from all the branding, the fancy bottle, the 'craft and heritage' it really is just distilled malt liquor aged in ex-bourbon barrels. I'm never going to drink a wine cooler you fucking knob end, they don't even exist here.

>>17074833
I don't drink a lot of beer as I'm surrounded by it through work. I do drink a lot of spirits, liqueurs, mixed drinks etc and I'm also fairly into wine. I think the thing is I just don't like whisky that much because it mainly just tastes like barrel ageing. Even the most half assed gin producer is making a ton more decisions on sensory characteristics than somebody making whisky.

fifth of buffalo trace, it's the only store that i know in at least a 40 mile radius that carries it in a size bigger than 375ml. they tried to sell me on a handle but i already got a backlog and i don't need a whole handle taking up that much space. i threw in a glenmorangie tasting set which also got me some lip:
>oh you just getting into scotch or something?
i tell him no i just was picking it up as a white elephant gift for a party i'm going to.
>wow that's some white elephant gift
if they didn't have the monopoly on the trace i'd never go there again.

Knob Creek Single Barrel

Those are a few I'd say are worth spending extra on, because otherwise I'm pretty happy with a $20 bottle of OF100.

Help me out fellow drinker got myself an old bottle of Saint Vivant Armagnac from a recently deceased relative. Must be at least 20 years old. Is this thing still good? It's still sealed but definitely wasn't stored properly.
