Are Americans really incapable of grasping a piece of bread from the sides and bottom without making a mess? I have been eating open sandwiches my whole life and have never thought that it might be some kind of a problem to not have a second slice of bread on top. Then again I am not a morbidly obese moron.

All you need is the bottom slice to hold the toppings. The top slice adds nothing but unnecessary calories.
