For one, that’s literally not something you would do when attempting to quickly stop a steam engine.
Secondly, opening a firebox does the opposite of cooling. It isn’t an oven. You aren’t “letting the heat out”. What does a charcoal grill do when you open up all the vents and give it more air? Same thing.

He did the equivalent of mashing random unlabeled buttons and fucked everything even more, the result was the opposite of venting.
You’re also sort of implying he somehow knew even more than the actual engineer he threw off the train who clearly hadn’t done these things.

The commercial is supposed to be funny; it seems point of the scene is that he literally did everything wrong with the unfamiliar tech.
